You're referring to James Randi? That's a generic prize for anyone that can prove any paranormal phenomenum in a scientifical way.
Also coat hangers work fine for connecting passive speakers. However due to the total lack of shielding I would advise against using them. With the lower voltages of line level audio you'd get electromagnetic interference, which is no issue with the high voltages fed to passive speakers.

I tried using coat hangers instead of audio cables, but I couldn't get them to stay in the XLR connections on my monitors. They keep falling out. Am I doing something wrong? :help:

you need more duct tape.

Depends what you mean by expensive. There are plenty of very expensive cables marketed at audiophiles who can convince themselves that they're hearing a difference.

Very cheap cables, of course, can be less durable and are less likely to take daily winding but if you're using them to hook up monitors then you just need them to be reasonably shielded.

I guess the key word is "expensive". Though that has some relativity, I guess the answer is "no" considering. I just hate these threads because they generally mask the importance of "good" cables.

I read two sentences and feel I need a shower. Big difference between a guy with an axe to grind and reasonable information. Sorry yairhol, just how I feel about it.

I feel that:

Analog XLR and patch cables offer no audible difference in quality. You are paying extra for craftsmanship, materials (Mogami/Belden/Canare cable, Neutrik/Switchcraft connectors) and often a lifetime replacement warranty.

However instrument cable is another ball game. I have found that quality cable can definitely make a difference, especially with electric guitar and plugged-in acoustic guitar (during live shows). Not so much for bass guitar although it couldn't hurt right? My personal fave instrument cables are Mogami Platinum and George L's .225 .
