These effects are very useful to me very often:
- I get a synthetic signal, like synth pad, and the stereo image doesn't fit in the mix
- I have received mono recs, I'm not doing the tracking
- I need extremely wide effects, like in some pop music
my comment was STRICTLY about the guitar demo you posted here in the beginning of this thread,so I cant comment synthetic signal becouse Im not using synths that much...and cant comment mixing and mastering /maybe here this effect will be more hidden=usable/...all I have to say here is...that in your demo guitar still sounds MONO to me,only some sort of "wider" mono...
Sorry,but to me the only bearable mono to stereo fx is still CONVOLUTION...but I know-it is not mono compatible and can add some amount of reverb if not from anechoic chamber...but at least on guitar sources I will still prefer this method,becouse I dont need to care about mono compatibility and dont like extremely dry guitar sound.
p.s.:Maybe you should use synths in next demo,than it will be different story...or full mix...like you proposed in your answer...

edit-now listened to that demo loop on page 2...after fx still sounds MONO,sorry but this has nothing common with natural stereo as we know it from classical,nor with artificial stereo as we know from pop mixes...this fx is class on its own...

Yes, I meant you often need such things. Otherwise why eq or reverb? Just track ready to go. It is a tool which can be transparent on some sources and creative on other ones. I look at it like at algorithmic reverbs compared to real reverb or convolution.
About the first example sounding wider mono: that's right! Giving a size to an otherwise point source! I like to place the tracks in the stereo panorama each one with its own size, not just panned.
I do this through recording techniques, of course, but sometimes I can't (somebody else's tracks? A synth stereo track with terrible stereo image like notes coming from random positions?), some others I prefer a less natural effect (like preferring an algorithmic reverb), often on strings.
Did you listen to the new demo? That is a full mix I got from a tester
About comparing this to convolution: there is a serious difference. Convolution adds to the signal, this one doesn't. Convolution is a series of delays, with all the consequences. Great on some things (sounds real), less suitable on other ones (comb filtering?).

You know on a full piece like that I'm not too keen on it. However, hearing what it did I could definitely see quite a few uses on individual elements in a mix. Would love to play around with it personally.

I'm currently using Basslane for this (not the stereo widening part), but this certainly looks like what I've been wanting if Basslane won't work on my new PC. Since upgrading to Win 7 and 64 bits might be perfect. $20.00 is a great price also. Please keep us updated. Any expected release date?

I have actually been using the beta on some full on mixes I have. It works wonders in my case because I am being sent vocals, beats, and instruments already tracked. the example of the beat was sent in mono for some reason and threeD added some depth to it. also in the final mix downs of full songs they ended up sounding great wider but clean not harsh and the only things that did get wider when I was mixing was just the parts and frequencies I wanted it to, All mono compatible I might add.
Just to add Its always great when tracking to have as many mics as needed but this is great in the case of no other option. Like I usually only do mixing more and more. Lately tracks are sent to me from all over the place Like the beat and the song that where being mixed where all recorded and sent from I think Hawaii. I am not flying to Hawaii to just help track some songs, I'm not getting paid enough to even try to get there. But when I get the tracks I start off with doing the old switch to mono and do some eq and compression to separate the parts then pan but some times just the little bit extra to move things in place helps a lot.

Yeah I'm sold... it's either adding a subtle, natural delay, or enhancing the mono source in such a way that it brings out the delay inherent (yet unrecognizable) there... anyway, my brain hears depth and breadth as a result, which means the plug is doing what it sets out to do.

sounds really nice doesn't it I used the beta on a few parts of a mix today. It came out very clean and natural sounding. not on everything mind you just a vocal or two and some parts of a beat and a synth. the cool thing is you can set it to leave the low end stuff alone of just widen that if you want.
