Hello All,

I'm looking at purchasing Arturia's Analog Experience Laboratory 61 Key, and then you get four free vsts-http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/buy ... tro87.html. I have no idea which ones to buy. I have never bought anything from them. Got a good deal and could not pass it up. I was thinking Oberheim, Spark VDM, and ? and ?. I do pop, R&B, and a little rap nowadays. You suggestions is appreciated!

Spark VDM is not really worth it, in my opinion. You cannot upload your own samples. Other than the spark interface, it doesn't really add much to what is already widely available for free.

I thought that I would really like VDM being that it's based on the spark interface, but, it really isn't that useful without the hardware. I imagine that I'll end up trading it at some point in the future.

My suggestions are to get the Oberheim, the JP8, the Prophet and the CS-80. The ARP and Modular are decent, but are complicated and I doubt you'd get much use out of them in the styles you listed. The Minimoog isn't bad, but easily replaced with other synths.

The Spark machine is awesome, but the software alone is useless. Even with the hardware, I find the software only barely tolerable. Don't even put the VDM on your 'maybe' list.

I had the same question.. and am headed down the same path. I primarily play 80's cover tunes, but some newer cover stuff. Bought the Laboratory 61 to augment what I have in Logic Pro. I have decided on the CS-80V, Jupiter-8V, and the Oberheim SEM... but am tossed between selecting the Prophet, ARP 2600V, or one of the Moog soft synths. I understand that I'll have rudimentary control over the 3500 patches that come in the Laboratory system (ADSR, Filter cutoff, resonance) -- but the four included synths will offer fuller control of what is provided.

So . . . for that -- am on the fence between the Prophet, ARP or the Moogs. I know I can download demo versions of the Arturia synths -- but also know i won't have time (or knowledge enough, to make an informed decision) on what soft synths benefit most from full control...

The Laboratory delivers Tuesday . . woo hoo.

thanks. .

I think they're all worth a punt, the Modular is my favourite though.

I have Analog Factory which unfortunately doesn't have the Oberheim, but it was an easy install for a dongled software. Arturia has always been quick to respond to emails no matter how trivial the question.
As far as synths I like in no order: The Moogs, Arp 2600, CS-80. The Moog basses are :-o
The Arp has some really interesting sounds, the Cs-80 sounds a little more modern.

System arrived yesterday. I picked up the Laboratory 61 and got the following freebies:
CS-80, Jupiter 8, Moog Modular and the Oberheim SEM. I didn't realize that the SEM was not integrated into the Laboratory software like the others -- but will be using all of these as additions to what I use in Logic 9 and MainStage.

So far -- everything is working very well.

SEM is newer than the Lab software so expected, maybe Arturia will bring out an update at some point.

In my own opinion, the CS-80V has the best balance between ease of use, versatility between musical tastes, good sound and complexity/features. Take that for whatever it's worth, though.
