If you can look at Jedward and think "style" in the slightest then, well, you have my sympathies.Tricky-Loops wrote:However, nevertheless they had more "style" than "your" UK contribution by Engelbert Humperdinck...

EEeep. Jedward has nothing on Lady Gaga. They look like extras from a Saturday morning TV show we had in my youth called Far Out Space Nuts. I'll try and find a pic..

But in Germany some musicians invented Kraftwerk and without Kraftwerk there would be no electronic music (because there would be no power)!!

That show was from the 70's, so that WAS a good haircut back then. I would LOVE to see the Jedward show. It couldn't have been as good as Flight Of The Conchords, though.

I think the show Vurts referring to was a reality, fly on the wall thing not an intentional comedy...
I liked this ad they did with Omid Djalili:
though mainly for Omid Djalili...
Not sure if they're actually a little smarter than they appear or just have good management.

Hat's off to Swedish song-writing prowess, but I've always felt the point of nations competing with songs is that they actually originated from the country, so wish there would be a rule about it soon.
It would surely end Azerbadjan's streak of top placings, but so what, let's hear some Azerbadjani songs then. Sooner or later they might anyway realize we would actually dig one with proper eastern flavor (done honestly and without frills) once everyone is tired of the western ones.

So right! Decades ago the songs of the Eurovision Song Contest were in the language of the respective country, and I loved it simply because I could hear DIFFERENT music from other countries and explore new (music) cultures.V'ger wrote:Hat's off to Swedish song-writing prowess, but I've always felt the point of nations competing with songs is that they actually originated from the country, so wish there would be a rule about it soon.

Today everything has to be sung in English and everything sounds similar - even the Turkish singer is damned to sing in (exerted) English to an oriental flavored tune. Nowadays, in soccer clubs, players of other countries are purchased (depending on the available amount of money), and so is in the Eurovision Song Contest (songs are purchased from other countries).
It's so interchangeable that I swear every year, I will never watch it, but then I watch it again in the hope to find some special, unique songs.

I used to feel that it should be in native tongue too, but now i dont mind either way. After all, some songs have amazing lyrics that lifts it like f.i. this: (which turned out too gloomy for ESC and didnt make it out of semi)
Some countries have crappy lyrics which is painfully revealed if in English, but if done in a language i dont understand I can imagine it to be mystic and great. Check out this from Estonia: (is Estonian the world's coolest language?)
And this one with an imaginary language that came 2nd:
But notice that Serbia got 3rd this time without any English, so there is a definite trend that European countries are getting more and more proud and might lose the urge to always use English.

I admire the tenacity of the Serbian singers. At every Eurovision Contest they sing in Serbian as it would be the most normal thing of the world...V'ger wrote:But notice that Serbia got 3rd this time without any English, so there is a definite trend that European countries are getting more and more proud and might lose the urge to always use English.
I hope that more people are following them with their native tongue...because I like other languages, they all have something interesting and mirror the culture of the country.

Is it completely ridiculous to suggest that some countries might even consider changing their national language in order to achieve international acceptance on the Eurovision stage? I realise that this question may appear to be ludicrous on a superficial level but think about the implications (not only within the ESC sphere of influence).V'ger wrote:I've always felt the point of nations competing with songs is that they actually originated from the country, so wish there would be a rule about it soon.
Once "rules" are introduced, the once quaint idea behind the ESC becomes tainted and any pretence that the competition is a "fun" event will be lost forever.
BTW, I'm not disagreeing with your wish. I support it. I just don't think it is enforceable.
I haven't even mentioned bloc-voting
