this vid solidified my interest in the band 'back in the day', right before Substance came out.

P.S. Look at the 4:45-ish mark, he plays/picks right at the bass' bridge. That's part of the sound. There's got to be a wee bit of compression there, unless it's just from the amp itself.

This was my initiation, after hearing about New Order in an article in some British import mag (1982?) I found a biography book, I forget now what it was called, aboiut Joy Division and heard this and was blown away, then the next year Blue Monday was out and me and a couple of my friends 'co-owned' the import 12" single and would take it around to house parties and blow all the kids away. It was just like nothing else heard before.

forget these trolls and naysayers.
I understand your search for the tone.
I would venture to say that Hook's melodic "tenor bass" style affected my bass playing, and for that matter, the whole concept of synth/bass/the rest of the score being untethered to their traditional roles.
e.g. make the bass the solo instrument, the guitar the bass line, etc etc

Have you seen the Joy Division movie titled "Control"? It's pretty darn good.

p.s. Just followed you on soundcloud. too bad you're not relatively nearby, haha, I'm sure we could jam just fine.

Post

Yeah I really liked Control, realms interesting and it gives a lot of context to Joy Division's music. And yeah it would be really cool if there were some kvr jam space :-)

Haven't seen Control, but often very British movies are hard to find here. I also want to see "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll" and "Telstar: The Joe Meek Story". I should probably just go out and buy the DVDs.

Dunno where you are (wish KVR put a country or somethin identifiable) but here in the USA they have this available in Netflix (DVD in the mail):

I meant in movie theaters. I might just take a trip to FYE and see if they have them as they're often one of the better places to get the less mainstream movies.

Most of my rentals are from Redbox these days so I haven't really bothered with Netflix.

Sorry to drege up this thread, but I read it at work Saturday and didn't have time to reply until now.

There's (unfortunately)3 different topics going on here:

1) Mr. Hook perked up certain people's ears in Joy Division, and I will always believe his roots are firmly planted on Macca's chest, but he was different and used the current technology in ways noone else did at the time.

I was a guitar player, but I played bass on stage a few times and I always went for "The Hook".

As much as I loved JD and "Love Will Tear..." I contemporaneously heard Ceremony as soon as it hit the states. It was devasting to me.

The fact that Curtis wrote it 2 weeks before... Well, it is humorous that the band never payed any attention to Curtis' lyrics and used a graphic equalizer to figure them out afterward.

Regarding the movie "control", I finally saw it a month ago. I liked it, but it's so non-judgemental that it almost lacks a point of view. It's literally about a young man's mess who chooses not to deal with it.

2) Emulating anyone is not copying someone because it's imposssible to do so with the exact same gear - you just sound like something else. Clapton can't play Hendrix, Beck can't play Page etc. and every musician in the world uses a starting point for everything.

3) Finally to Trilian. noisybuk (sp?) pretty much nailed the approach, but it does depend on what NO song you're talking about. To my ears there was always a slight delay on Hook's bass - or at least that helps me get closer to it.

Also a sustain pedal is crucial IMHO, and probably substatial editing in your daw will be necessary (AMPLITUDE!). Gotta have an amp sim too (Amplitube Free will do).

I've been trying to come up with an approximate sound of Hook's bass on "Ceremony" for years - long before I had Trilian - and I've gotten relatively close, but his slides on that song are more specific (to note) than usual and that's not something that Trilian does completely accurately.

Regarding Hookish compression & EQ I heavily rely on AT3 even though 99% of the time I use Trilian's fx, and you are better off forgetting everything you know about EQing and just go for it.

braj, I suspect there are some people here that could pretty much nail the "Blue Moon" bass in Trilian, but it's a lot of work even if you're a very good keyboard player.

Post

Yeah I'm not looking necessarily to nail it, not gonna play Blue Monday and I don't even know if it would find its way into a song, again as I said it was a bored little thing to ask while waiting for my doctor appointment. I just wanted to see the KVR Trilian skills basically, and have a fun patch to play with :)
