Do you use text boxes to type values into plugins, or just sliders/knobs?

Hi everyone,

Working on some GUI changes for future Valhalla plugins, and want to know how often people use the text boxes above/below a knob/slider/etc. to change the value, versus just using the knob/slider/etc.

Any and all feedback welcome.

I wish there was two handles on a knob/slider that let you control it coarsely or finely, instead of having to hold shift on the keyboard.

Eg. clicking right in the middle of a knob will let you turn it finely. Click on the outer rim and you control it coarsely.

Or dragging the mouse sidewards controls it coarsely, while vertically controls it finely.

Heh, well what bugs is me is how every VST has its own way to reset a parameter to the default value. Usually my go-to is just double clicking, and if that brings up a text box I just quickly type 0 and hit enter on the numpad.

That's pretty much the only time I ever use the text box.

Depends on the situation... When I'm searching for a sweet spot, it's nice to slide things along but when I know exactly where I'm going, there's nothing better than just typing it in.

Especially with wet/dry mix for modulation such as phaser/chorus, where quickly getting that exact 50/50 mix is crucial for that effect to sound the way it should.

Both, and yes it depends on the situation. All parameters dont require an identical way to handle them.

Both. If you want EXACT values, nothing beats being able to type it. Some knobs are very finicky...

Completely depends on the type of plugin; some need options for very precise usage others don't. I've never wanted to enter a numerical figure into a distortion but I do it all the time with delays for example.

With -effects-, mostly yes, you should give the ability to enter an exact value, it's essential. No reason to omit it, it can make things annoying and hardly usable. The more complex the effect is, the worse it is when that's not available. If I had no exact value entry in some flanger and chorus effects, I'd be really angry.

Also, there are plugins where the display doesn't exactly match what the control is set to due to display limitations or design and usability concerns. Being able to enter precise figures is important in these cases. An example of what I mean: A knob could be set to 20.4hz but the display only shows whole hz so it says 20hz. Typing in 20hz means you know it is set to exactly what you wanted.
