Hi,

I've just released my 2nd app 'USB MIDI Monitor' for free in the Play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... idimonitor

The USB MIDI Monitor lets you view all incoming MIDI events from your USB MIDI interface in a scrolled table view on your Android tablet.

Note that this app requires the following items:
  • Android 3.2 or higher
  • Tablet or phone with USB host support
  • USB MIDI interface that works without drivers on Windows or OSX
  • If your device has a micro-USB connector: a micro-USB to USB OTG cable (around 7 to 10 euro)
  • No rooting or special drivers required!!
For a list of tested devices, please see the link. If you have more devices or interfaces that work, please drop me an email.

Enjoy!

So if I understand this correctly, this will potentially let us play soft synths using an external midi controller?

We can get the data to our device now, we just need an app that can do something with the data?

I would love to be able to use a midi controller keyboard to play/record in Caustic.

My Note is still on Android 2.3.6, so I can't test this, but hopefully I'll be on ICS soon.

Hi Rich,

Well, have a search for Grand Piano, it already does it. However, Android's audio system is still bad, so the latency issue remains for playing virtual instruments in real-time.

Kind regards,

Thanks Davy.
I've tried a few pianos and this is the nicest sounding one. Still needs Honeycomb or above for the USB midi support though, so I'll try that and USB midi monitor out once I upgrade to ICS.

This app is amazing news!

Can anyone tell me for certain, or perhaps just make a qualified guess whether this will work under the following conditions:

- Samsung Galaxy S2 w/ Android 4.0.3 (unrooted).
- A micro-USB (male) to USB-B (male) converter-cable. ***
- An Akai MPD18 MIDI controller w/ USB-B port.

The OP mentions a USB OTG converter-cable. I Googled "USB OTG" and discovered that OTG = On The Go. Is this a special type of USB-cable? Is the aforementioned micro-USB to USB-B cable not the correct choice for me? - considering that USB-B is the port-type on my Akai MPD18? NB: Just to be 100% sure, a link to the exact type of converter-cable needed would be excellent! This "USB OTG" term confuses me :-(

If you good-folks @ KVR can tell me if the above conditions (including the converter-cable I suggested) should/could work with the USB MIDI Monitor app, then I will purchase the cable ASAP, test it, and report back if it (SGS2 + MPD18 + converter-cable + app) works!

Thanks in advance for help!

The type of cable shouldn't matter, as long as it connects what you want. In most cases a "on the go" cable is the most flexible option as it lets you connect any standard USB device to your phone. It has a male USB micro which goes into your Android device, and offers a female type A connector for whatever you want to connect. There's nothing wrong with what you're listing, it's just that it ties you to using only devices that have USB B connectors (can't do USB thumb drives for example).

Next, I've not seen USB host mode on SGSII, but the only one I tried on had was rooted and running CM9 (still alpha) so that's not a good reference. You'll need to find out if your stock ROM does USB host correctly, the easiest way is usually just to connect the cable :D

Your controller should be fine, most recent ones are.

By the way, USB OTG cables go for ~1-2$ on ebayif you're willing to wait for shipping from Hong Kong.

I must warn though that I first purchased an adaptor that did not have 'OTG' in its description and it didn't work. Then I bought two that were marked 'OTG', one that looked exactly the same as the first and one with a small cable. Only the one marked as OTG and had a cable between the two connectors worked and was around 7 euro here.

Just my experience. The non-OTG cable might not have power connected or something.
