It's an interesting read and he brings up one critical point that I think I made somewhere in this thread, in that big business won't take to this as it does nothing for productivity in the work space.egbert wrote:Here's John Dvorak teeing off bigtime on the latest Win 8 Preview. Enjoy.
I work for one of the largest companies in the world and we skipped Vista completely and waited for Windows 7 as Vista just couldn't get past the testing to allow it to be installed on the company's machines.
We'll see I guess...

As long as I can turn off all the crap and make it look like Windows 2000 then I'll be happy.

Yep, but I think it's looking unlikely...griels wrote:This.lotus2035 wrote:As long as I can turn off all the crap and make it look like Windows 2000 then I'll be happy.![]()

True, in the new release, there is no Start menu to enable, its completely gone. There are 3rd party apps which supply a new taskbar but the ones I tried either crashed or looked awful. You cant turn off Metro either.robojam wrote:Yep, but I think it's looking unlikely...griels wrote:This.lotus2035 wrote:As long as I can turn off all the crap and make it look like Windows 2000 then I'll be happy.![]()

The old thread had degenerated into pointless kindergartenklopperei. Rather than have all that dredged back up I've split this new stuff off into a thread of its own.

I hear there's a registry tweak which allows you to stay in the Win7 desktop. But most opinions I've read agree that Win8 will have a very rocky start over the holiday season. People will also gripe that there's no DVD player. I'm hoping the phones will catch on (Metro works well on them) and that enough people will like the new tablets and will buy touch monitors that things will look better by Win9. Touch monitors are now cheap. You can get 23" ones for less than $300.

Win9? Jeez, I'm already seriously considering a Mac for my next laptop. I don't look forward to being in their walled (as in Iron Curtain) garden, but the direction(s) Windows is heading in just seems nonsensical. How many PC laptops even have a remotely workable multitouch mousepad today? Not many, at retail outlets anyways.
I haven't tried it though (Win 8 ) so I really can't say. I'm trying to keep an open mind, but I'm very skeptical at this point.

There was some sensible stuff in the old thread - discussion and links to other articles about why MS has gone this way with the UI for Win 8 and some reports from actual users. This thread lacks that context now.Meffy wrote:The old thread had degenerated into pointless kindergartenklopperei. If it hadn't been split off, this thread would not lack flames. They'd likely drown out discussion of the news you brought up. Valid points could be quoted from the old thread and discussed here, as long as the fighting doesn't get ported along with them.

I clicked on a web video related to that article about whether Windows 8 would be a failure wherein the analyst said that the component costs may force the cost of the Windows 8 tablets to be around $1000. If that is the case, I can't see them making headway against the iPad with a more expensive tablet. Even in the laptop arena, it's price advantage that keeps people buying Windows-based machines. I think that choice is a bigger driver toward Windows in the desktop space than in laptops.
Windows 8 has me spooked, to be honest. Tim Cook's repeated statements about not combining a toaster and a refrigerator, coupled with rumors about Apple retaining existing Mac lines while also introducing new lines gives me hope that Apple plans to preserve the existing portions of their ecosystem as they expand it, rather than wholesale shifting. My hope for Windows 8 was that I would enjoy Microsoft's answer to Apple's excellent interface, and be satisfied with Microsoft. Now, unfortunately, I am concerned that Microsoft has lost the plot. This has me frequenting the Apple rumor sites.

With market competition and things moving and changing so fast these days, incremental change cannot keep up forever. Every now and then MS has to make a more major shift, like they did with Windows and Windows 95.
I think Windows8 will be largely unpopular, particularly with content developers, people who work with multiple monitors, etc. But MS will fix these problems in service packs and Win9 will be the OS to beat because it will have kept up with change while still offering an open (3rd party hardware and software) personal computing platform where not only data but an OS can be shared across various devices.
The authentic personal computer (user can choose hardware and software components) and the ability for power users to develop advanced content will not die with Win8, it will just hit a huge bump in the road. This will be good for Linux.
I think a lot of traditional PCs (desktops and laptops) will continue to be sold with Win7 even after Win8 ships, just as WinXP was. But once people get used to touch screens, most will not want to go back to laptops without them.
My next device will definitely be a large touchscreen monitor like the 24" Planar. Imagine controlling your DAW and softsynths this way...the 22" Dell is really slick for $300...it has rounded edges and can be positioned flat or at multiple angles for drawing, etc...really cool... graphics artists are about to discover large touchscreens that are affordable.

I keep trying to find an excuse to jump on the Apple train, then they do something that reminds me why I am where I am - Windows.
I wonder if the development of Windows 8 takes into account the business purchasing cycle of skipping a generation of Windows (XP to W7 to W9). Thinking of it in this manner, Microsoft is freed to pursue the consumer in W8, because no business was going to purchase it even if it was very good. Sadly, pro audio and video users are lumped in with the business users, but at least we're lumped in with somebody. At least Microsoft still seems to understand that we use peripherals. At least we can continuing using Windows 7 on the latest hardware. At least we don't have Microsoft determining the planned obsolescence of our hardware (iPad 1 is only two years old and it will not get iOS6).
Looks like I'm staying on the Windows train.
