Stop reading!! Start listening to jazz and just try to play along. Try to copy what they are playing (start simple ofcourse, e.g. standards like Autumn Leaves) and maybe look at chord tabs if you can't figure it out yourself.
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

It is, just like rock only uses 3 chords and dance music is just a big kick drum.jacqueslacouth wrote:I thought Jazz was just playing wrong notes and looking so smug about

closed-minded responding like this to something you don't understand says a lot more about you than it does about the genre you think you've so cleverly undermined.jacqueslacouth wrote:I thought Jazz was just playing wrong notes and looking so smug about it that the audience feel compelled to nod in an impressed fashion because they are "in" on the big intellectual secret,

I'm pretty much certain he was being self ironic. loosen up, eat a tab of acid and stare at the sun.jopy wrote:closed-minded responding like this to something you don't understand says a lot more about you than it does about the genre you think you've so cleverly undermined.jacqueslacouth wrote:I thought Jazz was just playing wrong notes and looking so smug about it that the audience feel compelled to nod in an impressed fashion because they are "in" on the big intellectual secret,

out of curiosity, why would you think that he's being ironic? i've encountered a lot of people have the opinion that he expressed.qa2pir wrote:I'm pretty much certain he was being self ironic. loosen up, eat a tab of acid and stare at the sun.jopy wrote:closed-minded responding like this to something you don't understand says a lot more about you than it does about the genre you think you've so cleverly undermined.jacqueslacouth wrote:I thought Jazz was just playing wrong notes and looking so smug about it that the audience feel compelled to nod in an impressed fashion because they are "in" on the big intellectual secret,

I'm interested in a book called "The Jazz Theory Book" by Mark Levine, but am wondering how advanced it is.
Forget about the jazz theory of music, it's all fluff. Check out the real thing instead.

quirky mixture between colloquial ("wrong notes") and elaborate ("compelled to nod in an impressed fashion") language.
there's humor in there not just bitterness.

If piano/keyboard is your instrument a good jazz resource is jazzpianolessons.com
I've been learning jazz piano for a few months now and this has really helped me.
As for theory, the book that I've learnt all I currently know about jazz is 'Jazzology: The Encyclopedia of Jazz Theory for All Musicians'.
Most of my progress has just come from messing about with my keyboard over some basic ii V I chord progressions.

I've got Jazzology, I bought it out of respect for a large influence in my musical taste... Thing is, my mind shuts off by the time I read a few pages of it.
