just got a touch mobile with android 2.3 (samsung galaxy).
i tried to install some "musical game" like guitar, drums, etc...
I notice there is some lag when in play a few notes in a row... the system just doesn not react as a "real" instrument.
is it normal or is it the software i choose??

can you recommend some good application (just for fun) to play a guitar, a piano, a synth?
or even a mini-daw to record something "in the box", e.g. with synth drum synth and pattern all together?

any other ideas about how to have some music-fun with a mobile when you are out of home?? :)

I do not plan to integrate the phone as an instrument of my studio, I just want to have something musical to play when i'm away from my "real" instruments!

thanks!

With androids latency issues best to probably look for stuff that doesn't rely on 'real time' play and response.. Maybe a tracker/sequencer type thing. I've stayed with my apple toys because of this so not sure any particular apps but a guy showed me some stuff at work on android that seemed to work fine in that vein.

I can recommend Caustic2. It's a Reason-inspired mini-daw for Android. Features a subtractive synth, a PCM (sample) synth, TR-303 clone and (sample) beatbox.

Regarding the latency, I think that's a shortcoming in the design of the low-level audio system of Android. So not that much you can do about that alas.

If you want to use it for music, there are a couple of things that might work (like the above mentioned Caustic2), but if you have the money, you will be MUCH happier if you get an iPad.

I went down this road a couple of months ago, and started out with the most powerful laptop I could get for $450. Audio didn't work well for it, so I took it back. I tried an Android tablet--I was VERY dissatisfied with its capabilities for mobile music making. I took it back too. I tried the iPad, and have been very happy with it. And now, with iOS 6 coming, things are going to be great! Latency with the iPad is already around 5ms. Inter-app audio, audio/video sampling (during playback), and multi-route audio that will come with iOS 6 will make it a VERY capable device. Also, there are literally hundreds of audio/music apps, and a couple dozen or more very serious music making apps.

For audio, there really is no comparison. The iPad is THAT MUCH BETTER, than anyting out for Android.

thanks a lot.
i know iPad would be the best, but actually i do not have 500-600 € invest in this "toy"... yes, i still consider a toy and i do not think i will integrate it into my studio or composition workflow, even if i understand there are wonderful apps... :)
now i have this android phone and i'm just looking for some fun! :)
i have tried caustic 2 and it's really good, even if i'm not into that kind of workflow. but it's interesting! :)

yes caustic 2 is really nice but it will probably lag on your phone according to what you specified-
i would recommend one thats really stable and really cool its called nanoloop- its a chip tune synthesizer with a sampler (short sample time) and sequencer and have a lot of small possibilities-
but if you want something deep and stable and that should work on your phone there is a software i couldnt recommend more than sunvox!
otherwise there isnt much more there is also supreme mpa that i havent tried but looks really nice but will also probably not work on the phone you have and is for pad-sample based production but it has sequencer and simple sample editing built in (as do the others)...
i am actually in love with sunvox and it just inspires me and i see it as pretty special...
also cool is that both sunvox and caustic is possible to download for free to use as programs in your pc-mac.

anyway good luck with your new phone i went through the same route when i first got my smart phone-
and now i have a tablet so its even more FUN!!!

You can buy a used iPad1 for around 200 EUR I think.

I have a Galaxy S (I've upgraded to a Galaxy Note as my day to day phone, but I still have the Galaxy S sitting around and install custom ROMs and kernels to play around with.

I noticed that once I upgraded from Gingerbread to ICS on the Galaxy S, the latency dropped immensely.
For playing drum and piano instruments the latency is hardly noticeable.

I'm using the Paranoid Android ROM at the moment, but there are other more "standard" ICS ROMS available.
