help.. I'm the worlds worst "over-mixer"

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

Not sure if it has been said in this thread before, but the tip that has helped me the most (as I tend to over mix/produce myself) is to always work in context of the mix. I almost never solo channels anymore, I work on them with the other channels playing instead. I apply this technique to nearly any process. EQ, compression, reverb, stereo/panning effects and so forth.

For me this is the ultimate remedy for the "tweaking a sound for 30 minutes on solo, to find out it doesn't work in the mix"-problem. It seems to have taken my mixes to a whole new level of cohesion, in addition to saving me truckloads of time. YMMV of course.

Try grouping into submixes such as drums, bass,keys, pads so instead of ahving to move all the faders or mute every other channel you narrow it down to a few busses in general
