I know one can make ambient music with any source, even with just a recorder
but what do you guys think is the better suited DAW for drones and soundscapes?
the most intuitive workflow, etc
I've been using Ableton live 8 for a month now, so I'm still early to change and dedicate myself to another one
I already have a few soft synths, but what effects are essential?

The choice of DAW is surely the least important choice in terms of required equipment.
Omnisphere is what you really want. It makes it all so terribly easy.
Probably something like Alchemy for it's sample mashing capability as well.

Definitely pitch shifting. You really should try out the perfect symbiosis of pitch shifting and reverb/delay: http://www.valhalladsp.com/valhallashimmer.J.X.R. wrote:thanx for the suggestions, but what effects are essential to an ambient composition besides reverb and delay?

(any grain delays and comb filters will work a treat)
Triple cheese from uhe is great for overpowering drones and atmospheres so you might want to try that.
Dont forget livecut and supatrigga, or especially DFX buffer overide or transverb

That lot should keep you busy..but do be careful as some of these works of art come with explicit warnings about the ability to destroy speakers at high volumes
