I love Ableton Live

I've been using Live since the 2.1 days and it's a love-hu-hum relationship. For some projects it's perfect, for others, like live recording of live instruments, it's more painful than Logic with comp take support.
I neither liked the re-design of the warp editing view but that's another story. The whole window system is either brilliant or has issues concerning fast scrolling to places. Ableton should also finally decide if the want to build a standard DAW (dumb idea) or a specialized DAW with live elements (that's what it was designed for and should have stayed that way.)

I could be wrong as I just found this yesterday - http://beatwise.proboards.com/index.cgi ... thread=716aMUSEd wrote:Live would be great if it had a decent midi editor and the ability to record live automation in the session view
This uses remote scripts to add features to Live like clip automation. check out the videos. Also I think you don't need M4L to use it.

I'm using Cubase for years and still think it's great, I also use Live though.

I bought Live at the weekend in the 33% off deal (plus Sampler). I've got to be honest and after many years as a Logic/Cubase user, I find the workflow incredibly hard to understand. I can understand the concept, but I'm finding it all a bit confusing at the moment. I am getting there though (I think)!

I'm a Logic user too and I share andrew71 frustration as well.

Deep - undoubtedly. I've bought in at a great price. I just need to find the time to understand it. It's not easy teaching an old dog new tricks!Mister Natural wrote:this is pretty deep software, george & andrew ^

It took me a while to "click" with Live. That was at v5 ... I have 8 Suite and M4L now and can't imagine using anything else. The session view rules imhoandrew71 wrote:Deep - undoubtedly. Oh well - thanks but tbh I think such workarounds tend to be so convoluted they end up killing any creativity anyway - since Bitwig Studio looks like it does support proper native automation recording let's see if that spurs Ableton into finally adding this essential feature - although maybe too late.thecontrolcentre wrote:Yeah, there are 2 of them ... both M4L devices.aMUSEd wrote:That might be useful although I'm guessing it's a M4L thingthecontrolcentre wrote:also someone recently released an effects rack that lets you record automation in the session view. I'll try to find it later ...

ClipAutomation
I also found this video about automating clips without M4L, but it's in German.

Also experienced frustration at first when I started working with Live. Now I know that 90% of things which caused frustration are actually much easier done in Live then anywhere else. You just have to adopt Live's workflow and then it goes so smoothly.george wrote:I'm a Logic user too and I share andrew71 frustration as well.
Wonder whether my advice worth a penny? Check my music at Soundcloud and decide for yourself.

I started out with Cakewalk and Sonic Foundry Vegas eons ago but switched to Cubase in 2003. Recently switched to Mackie Tracktion for multi-track recording. Been using FL Studio since it was Fruity Loops 1.0 for sequencing.
Each DAW has it's pros and cons. For example, I hate the piano roll in Cubase but love the WAV editing. Tracktion has phenomenal control over recording volume, so I use it for recording instruments and vocals.
I got a copy of Ableton Live Lite with my M-Audio AXIOM controller and have integrated it into my live performance setup. Ableton filled in a huge gap for live performance but I'm still not comfortable with it in the studio.
I don't think I could really commit to just one DAW but if I were starting out and limited on cash flow, I'd probably go with Reaper.

List your confusion and want's down then check em up on YouTube and the forums, I often used to say 'I wish Ableton did this and that' then later found out what all the little gui buttons did.andrew71 wrote:I bought Live at the weekend in the 33% off deal (plus Sampler). Their's pretty much nothing Ableton can't do, and with M4L it's endless. Infact strangley direct staraight linear recording of Midi and Audio into live is one of the best things it can do, check out your 'punch in and punch out recording markers. Also for the record I would try and focus on Arrangement and Session view as completely different approaches to making music to begin with, (They do interact of course) but I mainly uses session view for sketches, workflow idea, and live performance, and arrangement for it's obvious return to a track.
Arrangments can eventually be cut up into slices an re-imported back into session view to make a live set, which is sometimes the missing link.
