Magic vst that "adds air" ?

Hi,
I like the H82 bbe vst ( using 3.3 khz frequency, and very small amount).
I found it's nice to "add air" or get a "focused image".
Unfortunately after some time I find it artificial, and especially fatiguing (more sound pressure for nothing).
Could someone suggest a better alternative , to get an "airy" effect ?
thanks
note: it's for headphone listening

I often find when using too much of something - it gets fatiguing.
And from what you write I think 3khz is to low to start adding for "air". Try at 4-5khz as lowest. 3Khz is where your ears are still very sensitive.
It might be usage thing only you experience.
I am into eventually getting the Waves Aural Exciter but have not tried it yet.
Also looking at Maserati stuff for acoustic guitar which has an harmonic part for effect as well.
But also looking forward to what others suggest here.
Thanks for putting this thread.

You should try the demo for this one. http://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/plugi ... acter.html . I like it, unfortunately it's expensive for an exciter.

alternatively alternatively you could just boost a pultec at 10k+ by a little for air.

The Maag EQ has a specific knob just for air.

Are you jsut trying to get the soundstage to open up on your mix? Tessla Pro, when used judiciously on tracks and/or busses can have a very nice cumulative effect on opening things up.
Of course, that may not be what you're looking for as "adding air" may have a different meaning to me.

There is a fully functional demo that has no timeouts but stops you from rendering audio. If though you were to get hold of voxengo recorder and place it just after the EQ, you can record the audio as it plays back through voxengo recorder and render a file that way. This should give you plenty of time to try it. D82 sonic maximizer is another that im surprised no one mentions anymore. Its the next model BBE sonic maximizer and i think you can get it from nomad factory website these days. For High frequency excitement this is one of the best for the job. The Maag EQ also is worth investigating.

ok, thanks for all the suggestions , I'll try them soon.
@Mudcat007
It's not a mix, I'm elaborating a dsp chain for pure listening enjoyment ,
and on headphones.

I already got some nice soundstage using other dsp, but in fact I'm trying to get some natural sparkle especially. And if it sounds "focused" on headphone I like it too.Are you just trying to get the soundstage to open up on your mix?

What is the magic about the "air" knob? Isn't it just a high shelf filter that can be activated in any other (good) EQ unit?djanthonyw wrote:The Maag EQ has a specific knob just for air.
BTW, some free EQ's by Terry West also have an "air" slider. There's even a good exciter by Terry West.

Not to hedge, but it is something you have to hear to really appreciate.Tricky-Loops wrote:What is the magic about the "air" knob? Isn't it just a high shelf filter that can be activated in any other (good) EQ unit?
You can crank the 40kHz band quite a bit before it becomes too sugary. To my ears, it brings out a halo of space around the sound. It's more subtle that you might think. Also worth noting is the sub band, which is often extremely helpful. I use it quite a lot for tone shaping.
