I'm trying to figure out the guitar intro from this song.

I've figured it's in the key of A/F#min. And I have the first couple notes but have trouble once it takes off.

Could someone please help with it? Or yet even better direct or advise me towards knowledge on how soloing works and how to improve in soloing.

I'm also curious about modal changes during soloing. I am a beginner and figure my best chance is to follow scales, but sometimes I think they're not followed so strictly.

Thanks

"towards knowledge on how soloing works and how to improve in soloing." I bet the guitar player played guitar for a while before he figured to be doing guitar solos. :P

that's standard blues playing. it could take a while to understand what to do. Do you have a guitar? That's going to be kinda strange on a keyboard, it's guitaristic.

everything there is derived from pentatonic minor. There is something to the bends, the bends against the held notes and so forth. Technique; and it will take some time. You're better off talking to people in real life with a real instrument than trying to canvass the internet to read some typing I believe.

I mostly copped things off of records, slowed them down if I had to. I watched every player I could, went to every show where someone did that thing I could, watched people on TV, and I hung around players.

I do have a guitar and have been trying to figure it out using the minor pentantonic at the 14th fret. Everything I've learned has basically been off the internet. I would agree that I do need be around other guitarists more.

I am also now slowing the song down but it's still difficult to hear with the background synth.

Thanks for the feedback.

Actually this video is much better. I think he's pretty accurate.

good idea to find a visual on it.

one thing you'll find with that kind of solo is, they are going for a free kind of rhythm that would be hard to write down, it doesn't scan by simple subdivisions.

I thought the cover sounded better than the original but it could be it was exposed, more than anything else. I didn't care for the synth. I can see how that would obscure things slowed down.

one key 'lick' in that style is a move where you barre the first two strings [index finger] and bend the third string [a tone below] into the note of the second string here [B into C#], then iterate the 2nd, 1st strings and bend the tone below [E] up into [F#]. You can probably detect what notes already but the move of the held fifth and octave and the bends into is the stylistic part you have to realize. Generally a note [in the chord] and reiterate that by bending into it from a whole tone below. In a major penatonic you have that whole tone bend into the major third of a major triad as well. more of a 'country blues' feel.

when you get into minor you have this expressive second or ninth next to the minor third. on the F#m you've a G# you can bend into an A, or a cute thing to try is achieve the A from the bend before you strike it and play with that. When I first found that one I really leaned on it and I sounded more sophisticated than I had any business doing.

but you know a person could have showed that to you in a quick moment and you have experienced it. I'm kind of cool with the fact there was no internet when I began, I had no choice but to get out there and git it.

Thank you so much, some valuable knowledge. I'm glad I found this forum, I have been needing something like this to discuss these subjects.

BTW dig you music, shows your musical knowledge.
