Havent visited KVR in a while, and it feels strange to continue with this thread, but what the hey:
I'm 24. Life's been pretty good so far. Recently went through a crisis that I'd always thought would literally kill me but am extremely surprised to see that I'm still alive, happy and grateful as ever. :D

I tend to look at everything positively and my whole life has been nearly flawless. I have the best family one could hope for, and my friends are great. I got a pretty good job, I make music I'm happy and proud of and I'm a teatotaller. WHen I"m not playing the piano or watching a show, I"m playing chess or I"m out with my friends.

Overall, God or whatever man-fairy is up there or isn't there, has been extremely kind to me. :)

Oh, that's cool; I used to teach in Asbury Park and work in Ft Monmouth (mm 105 on the GSP), and visit the area frequently to see my in-laws.

So, I'm 44, married, 2 boys, and teach electrical engineering in Virginia. Play in a band. Like to build stuff. Often get paid to do it, which used to be cool but now somehow sucks the fun out of it. Do karate with boys - amazing how they can imitate so easily. Wish I had that ability at playing keys...every new song is a crazy amount of work for me. Lived in many different places/countries, but Virginia is really home to me now. Have insomnia. Like to run. Occasionally sneak out of work to hit the Indian food buffet 45 miles away. Condemned to rediscover every month that practice on the instrument, not reading about the instrument, makes me a better musician.

Seems there's a disproportionate number of us in the mid-forties age bracket.

Absolutely not. I wonder if it's historical, passed down from biblical times or something when you were expected to breed for the survival of the tribe or something.

There was a survey a while back where they reckoned people with children were generally not as happy as people without *but* they said they were... Kinda scary... :)

Post

I don't think happiness has anything to do with whether or not one has kids or not.

I think it comes down to the succession of the species myself...biological urges...who knows...who cares...

actually, the effects of children on happiness depend on marital status (c.f. research by luis angeles). those who are married have a slight increase in happiness when they have kids in longitudinal studies, whereas those who are not married have a decrease in happiness when they have kids.

of course, this hardly means that people should go out and have kids if they're in a relationship to make themselves happy, because the research doesn't tell whether you individually will be happier with or without kids. it's quite likely that there are a lot of people who know perfectly well that they shouldn't have kids and elect not to.

what scares me is that the people who can carefully consider and plan out whether to have children are probably the very people we would expect to make good parents, whereas people who are impulsive decision makers with low levels of self control would be likely to be the worst parents. unfortunately, reproduction being what it is, the careful decision makers are less likely to be parents and the poor decision makers are more likely to be parents. sort of a catch-22.

What the heck- I'll play too :)

I'm male (or at least I was when I went to the bathroom earlier). I'll be 57 in a couple weeks. Single, with no children that I'm aware of.

I'm semi-retired at the moment- I do consulting and sound design for some people, etc. in this area every once in a while. My past careers include playing in bands, both house and traveling soundtech work, cooking at various establishments, running the QA department for a plastics firm and overseeing color management for a printing firm. Due to a couple holes in one of my lungs (courtesy of an idiot who tried to steal a car from me back in 2005), I'm not as healthy as I'd like to be. Of course, the smoking doesn't help too much :?

I listen to (and have played at one time or another) almost any kind of music imaginable, from orchestral to free jazz to metal to ambient death polka. My outside interests include travel, reading and girl watching :tu:

I live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. My backyard's a former golf course and my roomie's a 2 year old cat.

My interests: Music (duh), 3d graphics, 2d vector and raster graphics, Star Trek, Star Wars, sci-fi in general, reading, browsing eBay and internet stores, watching political news (liberal slant), my cat and dog, my fiance, Mark, shopping (when we have money), and eating (it's becoming more and more apparent. I used to have such a high metabolism! I could eat ANYTHING!), collecting sci-fi-related merchandise, and helping to create our own.

I used to want to be a writer (space opera novels), director (I soooo wanted to direct Ender's Game!), and a special effects artist. Alas, I failed miserably. :(

Oh, well...

hey there, it's good that I can know a bit more about you guys. I may be a little late to the party, but I'll tell a few words aswell.

I'm 20, male, and I live in Hungary. I'm having a lot of inherited personality disorders which make life a bit more colourful for me. I'm currently studying systems engineering and I hope one day I could finish this college. They do their best to make us stay and pay.

The only growth I got from the uni is that I built up a resistance to bullshit and humiliation by these awful "teachers" there. (With a few exceptions) I suppose they were just trying to prepare us to Life.

Our family got severely hit by this economic depression... So I'm financing myself through student loans and shitty works. Since I was 16 I am always working part-time in factories, fields, etc... Apart from helping my family with chores and the business of course.
(On the fields I developed a close relationship with electric fences. :)) )

Due to my English knowledge - which I mostly got from here (thank you guys!!) - I was able to start working in an outsourced call-centre. Infamous low-cost airline, mainly british customers... I think I may last a few months before a nervous breakdown.

I want to get a job in the IT sector and leave Hungary while I can. I love Hungary, but I can't stay in these living conditions. I need to help my parents out, with some pay-back for their love and time. This depression literally robbed us. I desperately want to leave this place, but this damn college just gets more and more challenging. So much for just a freakin' paper.

Girlfriends just come and go, I don't really care too much about them. There's always one or two, but if not, I'm feeling perfectly good alone. Less voices in my head. I don't think I'll ever get married. :)

EDIT: I forgot: I have a lot of other interests including gaming, films, weapons, calligraphy, sports, and I love nature. Damn trees make me calm everytime I hike or just sit among them.

MUSIC: I started playing the piano when I was 16 (my first 12hrs shifts were financing Fatar keyboard). I loved it, and I think I had some talent. I had to sell it when I was 19. I managed to switch to electric guitar. I love it, regardless the fact that I have no talent and I'm a shitty player. I'd like to get access to a piano somewhere near, and I hope someday I will be able to play the music I like with ease. In my studio of course :))

I love every kind of Good music regardless of genres. I have a strong insight for quality, and I can easily differentiate between crap and good, be it metal, pop, drone, blues, folk or even tarnce music. Currently I'm listening to James Gang, with some vintage (The) Prodigy tracks loaded up after it.

I visit KvR on an hourly basis merely as a displacement activity, but I really like this place. It is The single constant compass of my life since I first registered here. (I used to have an other login from before, but I had to drop it).

I tried not to log in a few times, yet I couldn't resist. Apart from the usual flame wars when marketing is involved, I got to like the members of this forum more and more. I wish I could just grab a few beers with one of you guys once. Be it in Berlin or NYC.

Seriously, if I were you, I'd plan KvR meetings :P
