Hi! I'm looking for a software that will help me compose by giving me an interface to build a chord progression, have some control over the harmonic rhythm and build a melody over the progression.

So far I've found Palette Melody Composing Tool (http://www.palette-mct.com/). I've fiddled a bit with it, and it seems CLOSE to what I want. The only problem is it doesn't give control over the harmonic rhythm, and it's a bit of an awkward workflow.

Before that I tried RapidComposer as it seemed great, but it doesn't work on my PC... :/ Synfire Pro also seemed like a perfect solution, but it requires a dual core processor, and I'm stuck with an AMD Athlon XP lol.

VST or standalone software, do you have any other suggestion for me?

So what you want is to do it all from scratch. any daw will allow you to record from scratch.

As soon as styles enter the picture then you aren't creating your own rhythmic foundation you are using the styles in the program.

Some programs allow you to write your own "styles" but they are a pain.
If you want to write from a progression that you lay out and then apply a style to it then you may wish to consider Band in a Box by http://pgmusic.com
They have thousands of styles to choose from. And if you are into pulling out your hair you can write the style and then apply it to the song.

sorry for being OT, but after 6 years from the first dual core cpu hitting the consumer market i'll suggest you first starting upgrading your hardware...i dropped my old AMD Barton in the 2006 and i'll never regret it... now im' on a Core2Duo E6700 from the same year, and after 6 years i'm not tempted to upgrade to a quad-core or everyting else..everyting just run fine....

Try Onyx Arranger or JMT Orchestrator.
Wonder whether my advice worth a penny? Check my music at Soundcloud and decide for yourself.

Note that the free serial number does not work with the version of Onyx Arraneger available at the Ntonyx site which is not free. Two Websites with slightly different software and versions?!?!

You should also check our Temper. While not aimed at the same audience it can generate chords, contrain things and do wacky shit with midi. All in realtime with handson control. Bit of a learning curve though!

Another "boutique" app is Quaderno. Years old now, again a learning curve but can do amazing stuff with midi.

Ive also tried RapidComposer which I deleted after 5 minutes. Competely unituitve and loads of crackles using the built in sf2. I have an RME which never has buffer/latency problems
