I know. But still… why can't I buy Kontakt and Kontakt upgrades at an online retailer? Maybe Kontakt isn't going away… but maybe also it will soon no longer be available as a standalone product... unless you go exclusively through NI... if at all. I have a hard time believing all those retailers have absolutely zero stock of boxed NI full and upgrades. Or maybe it has all already been shipped back to NI for proper disposal.

I have no need for Komplete. I do not want Komplete. Actually, all I really want is the 100MB Kontakt engine freaking download!!! Can I have that, please NI?!?! Forcing buyer X to pay for 40+ gig they are convinced they won't ever use,
covers them against competitors that would be tempting to buyer X,
when that original view changes a few years later.

In the same way, selling Komplete to people who may never use
some of the big-ticket synths/fx, pre-empts future purchases, when
competitors have a tempting new release, or sale.

Similar to the big Amplitube3 group buy, in ages past, lock in a large chunk
of the userbase, then move to ala-cart marketing.

Now (and I'm pretty sure I'm repeating myself) there is allot of "player" versions and some companies (like acoustic samples) have moved away from it entirely.

I felt the same way kbaccki, until I gave in and went for this current offer, because I'm of the opinion that this is the best that it's gotta get. Suffice to say that I bought Kontakt just to run Synthmagic and Hollow Sun libraries...

I bought Kontakt back when gigstudio was the cat's behind, but I wanted a "lightweight", non-GSIF alternative… it eventually became clear that GS' days were numbered anyway, so it turned out to be a bit of forward thinking. I also had Halion 2 and VSampler 3, and actually preferred VSampler 3 out of all of the UIs.

You know... software that allowed you to... you know... map samples to key zones and functional groups, etc..

VSampler and GS are no more, and Halion 2 is a a prepackaged rompler called Halion Sonic.

At some point, we won't be able to just buy that software that allows you to map samples to key zones and functional groups... as it's own product, on merit of it's value to me as an individual tool in my toolbox for manipulating and interacting with samples. No, NI wants me and you to buy their content. All I want is a high-performance, advanced, sample playback engine.

At some point, FM8 will go away and be replaced by an "FM Experience" sampleset with NI's big fat logo slapped on it. Think I'm kidding?

Know what else is kinda wierd? I can't find Kontakt at any of the major online retail places... sweetwater, musiciansfriend, etc. Wassupwidat? Makes me kinda nervous, actually... all this phasing out, disappearing stuff...

You know, it looks like they have removed not just Kontakt, but all of their stand-alone instruments. Looking around, it seems like all anybody has on offer from NI anymore is Komplete, Maschine, and Traktor (and the various hardware units that go along with these).

Between the sale and this, it seems like there is probably a "major announcement" or some sort of shifting of their product line right around the corner. Knowing them, they are probably going to dumb down their product line even more than they already have.

(I know the "FM Experience" thing was kind of a joke, but I wouldn't be surprised at all, given all of the other products they have cancelled in the past and turned into sample packs...)

Folks who bought the SR Infinite Player or other NI approved 3rd party libs were able to get a crossgrade price of $135 usd last summer, so this deal a year later without one isn't a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but not too far from it.

Since they NEVER respond to customer feedback, I don't expect one to appear on their sale page anytime soon... NI Uber Nichts!

I want Kontakt, but I'm very apprehensive because I really think like a lot of people that NI will release something new that will somehow include Kontakt or it's features in some way.... I don't want to end up kicking myself thinking I should've waited.

This is the usual 50% off N.I. summer sale.
EVERY summer they have a bunch of stuff 50% off... This shouldn't be a surprise to any long time, loyal NI users.

Good news is, usually these precede a major software title release. (Think "Summer of Scratch" promo led into Traktor S4, and new Traktor Audio I/O's). Kontakt titles and Kontakt on sale just might be hinting at some new soundware titles, or a new Kontakt (already!?!).

Cash in if you see something you like. If there's something you bought already, be happy you've had it to use for the last year and half (or however long you've had it). If it stings to see your loved product on sale, then be fore-warned that anything else you buy, or comes out in the next 10 months very well might be on sale next summer. Same thing happens with cameras, video game consoles, computer parts, running shoes, etc.

Software sales are usually quite "soft" in the summer... (Folks are spending their money on vacations, gardening, drinks on the patio, etc, not apps). In order to maintain revenue streams, a sale prompts customers who had hesitations at the previous price.

As for single titles not appearing in stores any longer... that happened several months ago. Single titles don't sell very well when compared to the value of Komplete anyways. Most retailers probably found that their Komplete sales were 20x that of any individual title sales.

One good thing about NI (how often you hear that?) is that it appears their upgrade prices account for ownership of bundle parts - for example, I would pay less for Komplete since I own Reaktor.

+1 for the Komplete engine without the library. I'm of the same mind - would love that and the Hollow Sun machines bundle. At 50% off, I'm tempted to make the Kontact purchase, get the machines suite, set my desktop to steampunk, don a pair of googles, and waste a few good weekends - I think that would be worth it

I thought the Kontakt on sale was sold only in the boxed version? When I go to check on the NI site, it lists the boxed version to be shipped.

50 % of the Kontakt in these days is not a good deal at all,
comparing that just some months ago you got NI Komplete /Ultimate
including Kontakt and a many many many other plugins
by putting just some additional euros for this "sale Kontakt" price.
Everything is relative, of course, but in these economically hard days
I wouldn't advice anyone pay full prices. H.

How much was Komplete selling for a few months ago on sale?
