I'm considering creating a series of free effect plugins, partly inspired by the Kjaerhus Classic series.

My current thought is to only create plugins which can be made with simple GUIs. Say a maxiumum of 8 knobs or switches. The simple controls will be a limiting factor on how effects are designed. However that should make the GUI's quicker to produce, leaving more time to focus on the effect algorithms which is more fun.

The first proof of concept effect is a chorus. 32 and 64 Windows VST formats can be downloaded from www.onesmallclue.com/orange_chorus.php.

My goal was to create a clear chorus effect that could be used to thicken or blur synth parts or vocals. I'm fairly happy with the plugin so far. Depending on the feedback I might tweak the chorus algorithms a bit more. I'm not sure about the all knob GUI design. I think it makes for an attractive overall layout, but perhaps switches would better represent the functionality of the MODE and SHAPE parameters.

The chorus has three chorus algorithms:
- Type A mixes the dry signal with one chorus voice.
- Type B mixes the dry signal with two chrous voices.
- Type C mixes the dry signal with four chorus voices.

Each chorus voice is a delayed version of the dry signal. The delay time can be modulated to introduce pitch variations.

The plugin uses 2x oversampling.

The plugin hasn't been tested widely yet, but I'm hoping it will be resonably stable as much of the code has been used in other plugins. There might be some problems with the installer as it's doing a couple new things.

The installer:
- Copies the plugin DLL and two additional files to your VST Plugin directory.
- Creates a plugin data directory. By default this will be in "ProgramData\One Small Clue\Orange Chorus"
- Creates a registry entry so plugins can locate the data directory.
- Copies several files to the windows System directory. These files provide optimised math functions and DSP algorithms used in the plugin.
- An uninstaller is created in the plugin data directory so everything can be uninstalled safely.

What effects would you like to see implemented next?

Thank you so much! Very generous.

A new Delay would be a great effect.

coool! :)

One can never have enough delays and phasers. An octave effect, and usable auto wah/filter would be nice. Hopefully this chorus can do a nice watery vibey chorus effect as well as like a leslie rotary effect. Flangers are nice too.

I hope you can think in terms of unique characterful type workhorse guitar pedal effects (which can be used on any source) as well as studio rack type effects. Modulation/Volume/Delay/filter/pitch type effects are all good in my book. I'm really not looking forward to 10 different types of eq/saturation/compressors/distortion. Those are nice, but have been done to death recently, and are pretty much covered in all areas of freeware/commercial. Anything that will inspire song creativity as opposed to general mix tools. There is a reason people always rave about the Soundtoys plugs as "desert island" plugins.

Nice ! Thank you :)
I like the 1 to 3 voices feature.
Carefully designed effects with few but well chosen parameters are always welcomed.
A nice, rich phaser could be great, a delay along the lines of the Kjaherus one (with a tone control).
Also a all-in-one dirtyfier (including one knob compressor + bitreducer + distortion + tilt eq) ?
Maybe a "stripped down channel strip" ?
A multimode filter with envelope follower and lfo (with twin filters ?)...
Creating a reverb seems very time-consuming, so of course i would be happy to try one if you plan to release it, but i don't know if it is worth spending a lot of time on it as there are so many alternatives already ?

You should do something like this...

But dont emulate it.

Do you have any examples of this or what can make these types of sounds?

thank you!

You're taking the 64-bit route, I like that, thanks!!

Kjaerhus Classic Chorus is the chorus I use, but I will surely give yours a try, since it is 64bit.
thank you :)

A phaser which sounds like Phazor, but synced to host tempo please.

Website down right now.

Thanks for the freebie. :)

Here's a screenshot from my Studio One and EnergyXT. Oops. Both hosts support resizing plugin windows, but this one won't resize.

Sounds nice though from the knobs I can tweak. Go forward with your plan, future musicians deserve a quality pack like the old Classics.

Better than the one in logic, very similar to the interruptor one concerning the grooves, but better. I recently bought Poise, so you owe it to the fanbase.
Only joking, but if you put your mind to what you have said and came up with the goods, Im pretty sure they would take off like a rocket.

Brilliant idea :) I am all for 8 knob/slider max so it's quick to setup to most average midi controllers. One option I always like is BPM sync. I have become accustomed to analyzer windows for EQs, so only knobs would be weird IMO. However for most FX it would be great. The Kjerhaus stuff is still some of my favorite for low CPU and good reliable Chorus, flanger, phaser and delay... Would be great to see similar in 64 bit.

Keep it up. :) thanks
