Are You Happy With Your Arsenal?

The money I used to spend on bars, movies and video games I now spend on instruments, soft synths, and effects.
They have become over the last few years my main form of entertainment, and I am constantly growing my arsenal. I love trying out the all the latest weaponry and seeing which guns have the most accurate tracing... which missiles have the longest range... which bombs make the biggest explosions...
So much fun.

I hear ya. I quit smoking last year and that freed up over $250 per month which has been going towards my current music habit.evo2slo wrote:The money I used to spend on bars, movies and video games I now spend on instruments, soft synths, and effects.
I used to be a guitar player in noise, punk, industrial bands but got tired of the drinking, partying and aggressive behavior of my bandmates and fans. I was always into stuff like Kraftwerk, Brian Eno and Board of Canada, so I started working solo about 10 years ago and have shifted completely into ambient, electronic music (dare I say IDM). I rarely ever touch a guitar or my drums anymore but I do use the bass to create my own bass samples.
Outside the box I use a Korg Triton, Yamaha DX7, Novation Ultranova and Akai Miniak. I also have an old rackmount Korg M3R (M1 brains), x0xb0x, Korg Electribe and just bought an M-Audio Axiom controller for my soft synths.
In the box, I have so many free vsti's accumulated over the years but my favorites are MinimogueVA, Krakli Cygnus, u-he TyrellN6, SQ8Light and yes, I still use ReBirth even though it's free now.
As for purchased soft synths, Tone2 Firebird, NI Massive, NI FM8, Sylenth1 and u-he Zebra. I was so impressed with Arturia's Minimoog V freebie, I ended up buying the Prophet V and it was well worth it.
Next month's cigarette money will be going towards u-he Diva.
Needless to say, I'm happy with my arsenal but it will continue growing.

For the record, I'm not done buying effects yet...actually, I've just started on those.
And...even though I know I don't need anything else instrument-wise, if I hear something that just blows me away, I probably won't lust after it, but I may pick it up when that money is free.
We're never done growing, after all.

I still try the demos out of newer synths.
I'm all Diva atm.
I'm also getting more familiar with impOSCar2, which I like a lot.
The latest stuff, just doesn't sound that impressive to me, in comparison to what I already have.
Zebra, and Dune make the sounds I like for the more digital spectrum of tones, and Diva, and imposcar2 cover things on the classic sounds.
But always keepin an eye out for something different.
I also like CA-Alchemy, but find I don't like having/working with the sample thing mixed in there, and wish they would make a newer non-sample based synth...that would catch my interest.
I'm also interested in the physical modeling based synths, but nothing new going on there lately.

I am very happy with my instrument arsenal right now. I am debating on grabbing Komplete just because I think its a well rounded library (over kill sometimes though) but I really like what I have.
My favorites

I thought I was happy with my arsenal. After all I had Chromaphone, String Studio and Ultra Analog from AAS. I had Wusik Station and Eve. I had Blade and RP-Delay from Rob Papen. I had Big Tick's Rhino, a bunch of Xoxos plugins, and some de la Mancha plugins. I had several soundsets from Camel Audio. I had a ton of the best free synths. Tons of sounds and presets. That was it. I was set...
Then I got a good deal on the upgrade for Rapture. Then there was the no-brainer deal on Strum Electric. Now we have the sale at NI, so I picked up Alicia's Keys. Then...then...I broke down. I bought Kontakt. I couldn't stand feeling locked out of all those Kontakt instruments out there. Now there is a no-brainer deal on FXpansion Etch. Seriously...what's a serious gear addict to do? Stop me before I buy again.

While the posts have mostly been about soft synths, I have tended to have the same problem with real instruments. I have a ton of different ones and it's got to the point where it's hard to find the time to play them all often enough, so time to stop.
Still trying to learn the trumpet, but most of my music time is while my daughter is asleep so little time to play that one...

This. It's a brilliant instrument but I find I just don't use it and would gladly sell it if I could (2nd hand = NFR).mcnoone wrote:I also like CA-Alchemy, but find I don't like having/working with the sample thing mixed in there

Toontrack Music SD2 & EZdrummer (With most SDX & EZX Expansions) Plus Drumtracker and EZPlayer Pro which drives everything/Master MIDI drum/percussion data sender, Love it.
Native Instruments Kont(r)akt & Battery with some choice soundsets/kits (mostly more drumkit snares, shells and cymbals along with the odd 'odd' library), Not alot by Native Instruments themselves and none of the Kontakt library (Don't even bother installing any of it)
Ableton Live Drumracks, Sampler, Simpler & Impulse Drum/Percussion instruments/kits (Mostly my own nasty creations but some by fellow Ableton users and the odd 3rd party set here and there)
Wavemachine Labs Drumagog (It loads any VSTi now which is great)
There is more but they are the essentials. The person whom I work with is an XLN Audio Addictive Drums man with most of the ADpaks, EZplayer Pro takes care of compatability stuff and I can not say that along with multi-tracking acoustic kits (with ddrum triggers and an Axis double kick pedal with the basic trigger option fitted, Love that thing too) We are never felt left lacking, Rather the opposite

I want to get a Virus Ti as the next weapon in my collection in case it only works well as a plug.
Here is my list of my synth weapons.
Saurus
ElectraX
Gladiator 2
FireBird+
Massive
ANA
Nexus
Can I say that I'm not so fond in Zebra2 but can imagine that I get the Diva

I am very happy with my arsenal but very unhappy with my composing, mixing and mastering skills.
Oops. Edit. And I am very unhappy with my sound design skills too.

Yeah, I'm very happy with the tools I have/use to make music.
I also enjoy playing with new toys.
It's all good.
When it comes to making music, I think I could find something I like about almost any instrument. Still, there will always be a part of me that just enjoys learning new equipment and different approaches to working with sound.

i voted fish.
i have more than enough but...
am looking into audiocubes at the min and also wouldnt mind adding alchemy to the fold.
dont need em, but the cubes are more for workshops and live performance to keep it interesting looking lol, not that i care how it looks but some people do
alchemy, it would give me a simpler way of doing some tings i can already do but it takes a while and many more steps, so iits about streamlining one aspect of my workflow.
currently plugin wise
reaktor
crusherx
ace
vurtbox
cygnus
all get heavy use.
cameleon
orions ultran
toxic3
all get regular usage.
add to that fx from everywhere and everything.
live field recordings and samplers/audo editing
loops of synths(soft and hard) samplers/audio editing
mangle till i die!
