I think you've got it. Another important thing about an SSL-style bus comp is how fast it can react at fast settings, and thereby smash transients and/or produce distortion from following bass waves instead of envelopes. That also goes for any fast comp like 1176/FET, for example. So, you may want to open up the attack sometimes to let transients through (or blend in some parallel dry) or increase the release (ha!) to eliminate distortion (or bring your HPF setting up). People talk about how a compressor grabs or clamps down at fast settings.
Other things to keep in mind are the ratio and the knee. I hope PSP gives us a specific rundown on the knee shape at different ratios. They've said busspressor is more aggressive, so it may be a hard-knee at all ratios. The original 4K bus comp is very soft at 2 and hard at 4 and 10 (twss, again). I'm not sure about the Duende, Waves or Cytomic, but that's supposed to be how the UAD is.
Back to the HPF: I guess it is on all the time, but at the lowest setting of 20 shouldn't have an audible effect other than a probably overall good one of keeping sub-sonics out of the detector.
You mentioned making things louder. Remember that downward compressors actually make things softer overall without make-up gain. Generally, I set the make-up gain so that I don't hear much level difference when it's bypassed.
With any compressor, I usually play around with getting a good sound with a fairly high amount of actual compression and then back that off. A lot of times, that's the only way you'll really hear the effect of the different parameters. On the other hand, settings for deep compression might not be the best for lighter, but again, you're kind of shooting in the dark when adjusting parameters with little gain reduction.

More good info
What I noticed was like
was how much better it was for "the roots" brushes. It's like the "life" button was turned on
With really hard slamming stuff though I like working more with eq than compression.
@HPF: Yeah, you are right, at that low frequency it's not a huge but I still think it would be nice if it had an on/off switch to really a/b.(I see a feature suggestion coming on!) Then again, they'll probably just say "use the a/b comparison

Ha! You know you're going to buy it!!!manducator wrote:I don't want to buy this because I already have a zillion software comps (ddmf, the glue, PSP mastercomp, PSP oldtimer, Stillwell theRocket,...) but it pumps so nice on the drumbuss...

Well, I kept a/b'ing it against other compressors I have with similar settings and I couldn't find anything I have that I liked nearly as much.
What I had been doing is very cheap school and putting RR set to "ny compression" and it was.......eh. It's like it worked but was pretty boring. The PSP just seems to be a nice but inexpensive solution.
Again, When I demoed the glue and SSL there were things that didn't work correctly and put me off (confirmed by Andy btw) but they sounded lovely.

I already did...Eric C. wrote:Ha! You know you're going to buy it!!!
What isn't working correctly on the glue? I guess we can expect an update since Andy confirmed.Again, When I demoed the glue and SSL there were things that didn't work correctly and put me off (confirmed by Andy btw) but they sounded lovely.

I don't think so. It was a while ago that I talked with Andy and his comment about the mousewheel is "its broken, sorry about that". Well, if it's broken, wouldn't one fix it?
That was a while ago.
Mousewheel works great in buss pressor
and it's very important to me

The Duende bus comp 2:1 knee is soft, as is the Cytomic, though The Glue guide says the 4:1 knee is medium. It looks like a more completist SSL-type bus compressor plug-in collector might want all of these (Waves, UAD, too). I could also see just sticking with any one of them. Me, I'm staying with the Duende and PSP that I have for now. I think I've bagged over my legal limit of compressors for this year anyway and we're barely into the second half. Plus, I don't want friends and neighbors to tip off the compressor police.

I wouldn't think of it in terms of on/off; the detector has to react to something, and 20hz is the lowest possible audible frequency. They could have put an 'off' label instead of 20hz and nobody would be the wiserhibidy wrote:Thanks. I can hear that. So it's always on?audiosabre wrote:The S.C. HPF is a high-pass filter in the input detector circuit that will allow lower frequencies to pass through the compressor unnaffected.
Turning it up can bring the kick and/or bass back into focus, if you feel they're being compromised by the compression
A major reason to bypass this control would be to coax the compressor to pump/breathe. It pumps enough already

The duende Bus comp has to be the best surely?? ITS SSL SO....antithesist wrote:http://www.solid-state-logic.com/music/ ... /tut_5.asp

I agree to a certain extent, but "best" is also subjective. Even if the Duende and PSP sounded exactly the same, which they don't, the extra PSP features would be enough for me to have both. I'd probably always start with the Duende unless I knew I wanted a feature it didn't have.Trakstar wrote:The duende Bus comp has to be the best surely?? I like to have two good models of each classic compressor, which is pretty much where I'm at now since the McDSP 6030 Ultimate comp covers so many models. Their SSL stuff is in their Channel G line though. I also have all the IK comps (no SSL). Anyway, you get the idea.

Yes, I just tried it and I can turn up the ratio with the mouse wheel, but I can't turn it down. All the other controls seem to work like they are supposed to. All I tried so far is the AU.sunny_j wrote:anybody else experience mousewheel bug on the ratio knob with 1.0.3 ??? Doesn't move properly !!hibidy wrote:Busspressor 1.03 released.
