Yea but the opposing point is stronger.
If you get a synth with presets done by designers.
You can examine the presets, to see how different sounds can be done.
While at the same time, learning the synths capabilities.
Actually learning more, than what you would with just an init patch.

There's a list of advantages I could write for reasons to check out other sound designers work. The list out numbers those who think it useless to do so.
If I got my Roland D20 without presets, I would have thrown it in the trash.
Thanks to Eric. I was able to learn how his great sounds were achieved.
It's how we learn. Not doing so, would have left me lost in a small window of meaningless numbers, and blindly guessing...which can work, but not as fast as learning from others sounds.
Purist preset debates aside.
It might be a free choice to not listen, use, or more importantly, learn from others sound design work. But it's your loss to not take advantage of it.
Clearly a disadvantage. Even just a quick run through to see something that might appeal or interest any given user, is better than doing nothing with them.

Yeah, I never ever use presets but I bought a few quality soundbanks from sound deisgners I admire nontheless. I learnt a lot from them :)
It can be very inspiring to see how other sound designers approach things :)

All fair points in general

the ones though, in where i might insists are :

1) in the case of instruments that might deserves to be better handled by the user because of their intuitiveness and their simplicity

2) in the case of sampler that deserves to be known better as sampler rather than sample player (and i knew this point made debates here by the past..!)

Where is it written that to make music one must learn to make patches?
Krakatau wrote:On that ground i voted for low prices of some plug-ins without presets...and of course, with well-written users manual included !
That's already been shot down several pages ago as the consensus opinion even by the OP himself is that removing presets wouldn't reduce the cost of a synth by that much if at all.......

That would be me on both counts. I just can't see the point of not using other people's patches and taking advantage of their expertise.

Come on... did i mean that one way or another ?

:)

Obviously, as composer you have no need for it except to taylor the patch you've choosen to your own taste

I confess, i didn't read the entire thread i detail and hope you'll forgive me before we both pass away on a far future day as much as possible...

i see this as a possible policy from some purist devs who might see an interest in inducing users to be more focused on sound design

Forget it bro...

That would be great as menionted Dennis mate, I didn't spot that You had already written exactly what I ended up writting  and I could of just quoted You and +1'd it like I am doing here. Since all the know Me know that I am not a big synthesizer user then perhaps I am not as qualified to comment as much on that area but I do get alot of use out of alot of the magware/freeware synthesizers, Since these are usually cut down versions of commercial offerings the one's which I do rather like it would be alot more incentive to invest in a cheaper, patchbank(s)/soundset(s) free version simply because I would be buying a license to further my own skillset and not to have access to more features with a rut load of presets to go with the exteneded features.

It has nothing to do with Me at all thinking I am at all "betterer" than those whom make a good income off of creating patchbanks for synthesizers, Just that they are of zero benefit to Me personally. If it does not add to the cost then great and I can just ignore/remove them. However most I see are advertized with the preset quality/quantity by "the worlds best sound desingers" as a big bullet point-style feature which immediately puts me off as it always makes me question what I would be paying for.

If its something like a Mellotron ROMpler then obviously its abit different but for Superior Drummer for example they sell name producer kit & mixer presets; Why the frig would I ever want thier drumkit preset setups? :? No thanks Mr.Andy Sneap, As much as I have a good many albums with You're name on them and enjoy said records it further makes the idea even more NO Thank you very much, Again if they come free then they can be just ignored/erased but its not always the case.

Plenty of 3rd party and expansion stuff by the original developers that it can and does seem to stop people in any way adding more soundsets/patchbanks especialy when it is in a style they are after and it would maybe be even better that way with developers and 3rd-party patch peoples to come together to make thier money that way whilst non-preset folk benefit also

Is that really so difficult for some people to grasp as a concept? If so I almost feel sorry for You

While I voted "no" in the poll, I totally understand that having an easy to access "init" patch or a quick "new" button on a synth is a great feature. It can be annoying when you want to progam a new sound and the synth only has convoluted evolving soundscapes awash in tons of FX.

I can't possibly know what you meant only what you wrote.......

So again you feel you are capable of creating presets that none of the professional sound designers could create with the same synth? Are your needs so different? You've never used other people's presets? Then I almost feel sorry for you for missing out on so much.......

Absolutely. Every synth should come with an INIT patch and empty bank........

Let's recap:

No developer is going to release a commercial synth with no presets because the other 90% of the population would be screaming bloody murder that how could you release a synth for XXX dollars with no presets.....

No developer would likely want to deal with two .dlls one with presets and one without.

You know even if there was a price differential between a synth with no presets and the same synth with factory presets someone would buy the full version then upload the factory patches for others to use so that negates any incentive for devs to try such a scheme...you know people would do it.

It's already been discussed that the price of a synth wouldn't go down that much without presets as a lot of Sound Designers work for an NFR copy of the synth or for very little money that when spread out over hundreds of units wouldn't make that much difference.

You can already simply ignore the factory patches if you don't want to use them and happily go on using just your own.

Comments like that.....seems like you're missing something as well.....
What did I miss? For someone with even a touch of OCD it could be mildly to greatly irritating to have someone else's synth patch idea's locked into a program which is paid for. I'ts like someone using your tooth brush, yeah you can disinfect your tooth brush and try to never think about it but it will always sort of be lingering there as the annoying fact. Why would I want a bunch of genre sounds which I find detestable stored anywhere on my computer hard drive?

I wish there was a way to ditch the preset patterns and samples in my BOSS SP505 groovebox. It has a very limited pattern and sample memory, yet it's stuffed with XOX drum sounds and terrible drum patterns that you can't delete or overwrite.

That's the heart of the matter.....you're saying that none of the professional sound designers hired by a developer could come up with the patches you can? In any synth? Ever?
Are your needs so bizarre or simple that no talented SD would ever think of them? Only you could possibly create such masterpieces?

To me what you are saying is that none of the SDs are good enough to possibly think of what you need out of any synth. See how that sounds pompous?
ive made the importan word i used bold, just to see if you can understand the difference between what i actually said and what you think i said.
lets ee if you can work it out eh?

also, i thought you werent interested in the dscussion anymore, or are you just here now trying to stir up trouble?
