So you used a single contact test light? Wrong conclusion then, this is how it should be. You have a "live" and a "neutral" wire in the power socket. Since DIY seems not to be your thing and money also doesn't seem to be an issue, I'd suggest to hire a qualified electrician to look into your troubles.
