Echoes in the Attic wrote:Sounds great Urs. The only thing I'm hesitant about is if we purchase ZebraHZ, naturally we'll want to use those presets in Zebra3 when it comes out. But it won't be able to load them? So ZebraHZ presets will remain stuck to the ZebraHZ plug-in? I guess not that big of a deal, but it seems like later in the year (or whenever Z3 comes out), we'll effectively have three versions of Zebra!

That's what I'm slightly confused about - is everything in the HZ version going to end up in Zebra3? ie if I wait I'll get it all but for the cheaper upgrade price?
Or will ZebraHZ remain unique?

You haven't been reading some recent other thread in instruments lately have you?
:hihi:
I'm thinking it's all or nothing.

Well, we've wrecked our brains over these questions too.

I think about 90% of the presets or so will work in Zebra2 just fine. It's those few tens of patches that use ZebraHZ features...

The question was, shall we release it with or without. But then of course the set would be complete only with those patches, and thus with ZebraHZ.

The other question was, does it make sense to release such a soundset literally as info about Z3 dripples through the channels.

It's rather clear now that Z3 won't exactly match the sound of Z2. Thus we couldn't just wait with the release until Z3 is finished.

So, weighing things against each other, this seems to be the best option: A soundset with a prototype pimped ZebraHZ. Most people will probably use ZebraHZ once they got it and leave Zebra2 behind - ZebraHZ should play all Z2 patches just fine. I see no reason not to update/support ZebraHZ over the coming years just like Zebra2. We've got our support site in place over which we'll make them available for download, even if they've left the store front.

And then we believe that once everyone sees what we've planned for Z3, there won't be any questions left - Z3 will slowly replace Z2. We might even go as far as to port existing preset libraries to make this move easier, possibly even The Dark Zebra and third party libraries. And of course we've ben toying with import options for other legacy synths.

I'm in for both for certain!

1) Zebra3 sounds like it's going to be great and the $30 fee is very generous compared to other upgrade fees I have paid in the past.

2) ZebraHZ sounds like it will be very inspirational not only for the sounds, but also as a learning tool... to be able to see under the hood and peek over Howard's shoulders as it were and learn from the master. :)
Available on iTunes, Amazon, etc.

@Urs, so when can I purchase my upgrade to Z3? I'd happily do it today. :)

If someone isn't into the presets then honestly, wait for Zebra3. Z3 will have much better integration of the features. ZebraHZ is a bit clumsy in comparison.

Thanks & indeed!

As far as I know, most presets are HZ/HS. These two are like chalk and cheese, but lock them in a room with a synth... ;)

We haven't even started coding really...

This sounds pretty wild!!

One more question... I don't believe I've seen it mentioned in the thread, apologies if I've missed it.

Will ZebraHZ only be available corresponding to the release date of the movie (July 20th). Or will there be a bigger window? Just want to make sure I don't miss it!!!

Nah... should be up for a while :)

(still waiting to clear rights to use the names of the films, otherwise we'll have to word it really, really cleverly...)

Would it be possible to do video tutorials based off of the Dark Zebra presets? Maybe talk about what the needs and vision were when designing a particular preset, how it was working with Hans Zimmer, etc? Doing it documentary style would be cool as well, and I would be willing to pay to see it as part of a collectors edition/increased upgrade fee to the new Zebra.

In any case, really cool announcement. :D
