Music production and arrogance

I think 'producing music' in place of becoming a musician, like at all, is a form of arrogance.

I disagree. For many forms of contemporary music, 'producing' is appropriate form. That is since you don't really need to be a musician to do it. Take hip-hop for example, or ambient, or whatever kind of mechanic-electronic music, so to call it. We could discuss, if the outcome could be still called music, but 'producing' is spot on. There's nothing arrogant about it. In fact, I think calling it 'arrogant' is kind of arrogant. On the other hand, I think any artist has to be arrogant, either a musician or a producer.

+1 Does the matter of arrogance or pride really come into it. Or is it simply a statement of fact with no reference to personal image or ego whatsoever, ie_

then there's this aspect too:

musicians CREATE music

CREATE and PRODUCE are pretty much synonymous, at least at some level

plus the there is some language difference between many of us and the OP

and I think certain people want to exert their dominance in an area where there is no universal system for judging value of expression...

Well, I don't want to look arrogant, but I slightly disagree with Ernest. You can make good music and be arrogant about it, or be proud. It's not the same. Sometimes Todd Rundgren has been reported to be arrogant, even if he made some great albums. Keith Richard is proud of having made Exile on Main Street. Not exactly the same. I don't think arrogance has to see with achievement, it's an attitude. If you say you're gonna make something great, you may feel and think and hope that it will be great, or you're just stupid. It's up to you.


And some old fashioned people even compose or write music they let other produce.
