Is there really not a single cheap basic sampler for OSX?

I hear ya... but unless that website you linked is incorrect, short circuit is WAY more powerful than vsamp. The features listed where extremely minimal.. I would at least like to have all the basic filter types, and sample offset and loop automation available. A couple of lfos would be nice.

like I said, probably just gonna get kontakt. 140 bucks seems way worth it.

Studio One Pro also includes SampleOne, though I never really used it so far. If you have S1 but not Pro it is another reason to upgrade maybe.

Actually I think it is included across the board in Artist on up.

Trying to avoid buying kontakt...

I don't need everything it does, I really just want a quick and dirty sampler with a filter, basic looping, and automatible/modulatible sample start point. Is there nothing? On Windows I had directwave which would be fine, but there's seems to be nothing of the sort for OSX.

For just basic sample triggering, I rather use Battery than Kontakt. Seems much more straightforward to me. Or you can use MiniSpillage2 which is also a drummachine, with 8 pads. But allows you to play chromatically and has the filter, distortion, LFOs etc. I believe it's $37.

Exactly. I'm demoing S1 now and just opened SampleOne - drag a wave file into it and bingo, there it is, ready to be tweaked.

interesting. I'm only familiar with the mac app store price of 200$. Can you use the plugins as AUs in other DAWs?

I'm pretty boggled by this too. After all this time there isn't a simple low-cost bread and butter sampler on osx. Buying a DAW just to fulfill that purpose seems nuts to me...

Let's see...it's a $100usd, for a great sampler and numerous other (better than most synths and plugins) plugins, for the express version.
That's cheaper than any other comparable sampler that I know of, not to mention the other plugins it comes with, and great library.

lol I have S1 and have never once opened this up. But then I have Kontakt and Logic And I didn't want to download the several gigs of extra (and probably redundant) content for S1's sampler.

edit. Just did now - reminds me a bit of Simpler from Live. Actually I notice S1 seems to have 3 sample based instruments, is Presence also a sampler? tbh I haven't really looked at any of them. There's a drum thing too by the looks of it.

Not many know this but - Mainstage includes exs sampler! Its what - €24 on the mac app store? Ok - getting sound from mainstage into your daw can be a little convoluted (and in my experience can be easier simply by hardware patching into your DAW) but comes with the full sound library and sampling capabilities. You dont need Logic.

Theres also the other amazing other things you get with Mainstage - synths, organs, drum machines, physical modellers. Alot of firepower in it.

I dont own mainstage anymore though, as I sold it with logic studio - also I found if I wanted to use a mainstage instrument live, I couldnt use it in a satisfactory stable way with Ableton and an internal routing (plus all the buffer settings). (You could use it live, but I would personally use it standalone and have all your AUs within it. Midi setup can be a pain in the ass though.)

But depending on your requirements - maybe for pure recording and producing, this is by far the sweetest deal going at the moment. Its hard to knock its workflow with such an amazing amount of instruments. Exs24 is worth far more than €24 on its own!

No. Just like Live, and other daw included samplers. You have to use it from within only.
Then again, there are ways to workaround that.
Using sample converters or rewire, or transferring mixed down tracks.
That's Logic Express though, and it doesn't include Sculpture, and certain other plugins.

I just switched to a Mac recently but I'm still using Ableton Live. Would all of these plugins be usable outside of the Logic environment, i.e. within Ableton Live?

Just get that chicken systems sample converter, then convert to SF2 files.
Then you can use the mac included SF2 player from within any DAW.

That's Logic Express though, and it doesn't include Sculpture, and certain other plugins.

Slightly OT, but there's only one Logic now available, that's Logic Pro. It includes Sculpture, but lacks some applications of the former Studio package, such as Mainstage and Waveburner. Otherwise, it's full featured so including all plugins and features previously not available in the Express version. $200 for that.
