NFRs flying around distributors is not unheard of...

Discs in the garbage, maybe less so.

To be honest, it initially sounded plausible that he found the discs in the garbage. It became less believable when he started saying that he knows who they belonged to, still thinks that he can get registration numbers for it, etc. Does not compute.

I have no doubt places like Sweetwater or AudioMidi have NFR copies of lots of software for support, testing, and reviews.

What I find amusing is the OP first says he found some discs in the garbage and all he needs is the key. Then we dig a little bit deeper and he informs us (1) he knows who threw it out and (2) he is "not a nice guy". I read #2 to mean "The guy is still using Omnisphere and won't share his key with me because he knows it will invalidate his copy". And then he said some local distributor will give him an NFR copy (and he wants Trilian too) even though he "isn't really insterested in specrasonics software".

The whole story is extremely fishy. And funny.

You said you can't ask him for it because he's not a nice person, apparently. You could have easily said there is no code because the disks were mispackaged - i.e. discs but no box and no manual with serial - if that were the case.

The distributor doesn't care how many are stocked in the shop anyway, just the number they supplied. But management at your store cares about it unless they're incredibly incompetent. However, as suddenly a copy of K8U that a few days ago was bought at cost is now free, apparently, maybe five-fingered discounts are all the rage there.

Spectrasonics stuff is only supplied boxed - the chances are that to install a version for demo purposes, they have to open a box to do it to get the code and maybe register that one as used for demos with Spectrasonics. Just having a set of known NFR codes for dealers and disties is asking for trouble. They blow a boxed copy each time but it's easier to manage the codes overall. It might be one of the reasons why it takes so long to do a transfer with Spectrasonics because they have to check each code against their separate list of registered NFR codes and why Omnisphere discs turn up in the trash at a retailer. Once installed, the discs are worthless.

Yea, he seems to have missed the point that those disks were chucked for a reason. The price of "Omnisphere" is the price of 6 DVD's and a box, but the price of a registered license is something else entirely. If you get a code as an on-the-sly hand-off because you have retail insider connections, it's not much better than using a crack.

If you are in doubt about this, why not email Spectrasonics and ask them if your NFR--garbage-Omnisphere is a legitimate license in their eyes, and if they are fine with you "owning" their product from here on out?

BTW, I'm not jealous in the slightest. I own a legit copy already.

You're lucky, the only thing I have found in the trash so far is a Casio CA-100 keyboard... no need to say I put it back where it was!
