routing audio between apps in WinXP

What I like to do is:
run EnergyXT standalone and route it´s audio to a virtual output that I can set as an audio input in my audio app (Magix Audio Studio - doesn´t support VSTi)
You can use sound servers to do this in linux. Is there anything that will do this on Windows XP?

Well, depending on your sound card used with Windows XP, your standard sound card drivers in Windows XP should allow you to have a bus 'wave out' that can be 'heard' by any software device on the same bus (here you would select what sound I/O device to use in your particular app's options tab - in other words, in Audition or even Reaktor, you'd select your default sound input/output device - Asio, Sound Blather, or WMD, etc., and you're go from there). This means that, whatever application is producing sound on your XP PC can be recorded or 'heard' by any other app on the bus.ezza wrote:What I like to do is:

For instance, if you use CE Pro/Audition/energyXT and you have a standard Sound Blaster/EMU-based or Analogue Devices-based sound card running on an XP platform and you want to record a live sound track of some sort that is being output by another application (in your case energyXT), you simply go to the Control Panel/Sounds/Properties in XP (or double click on 'Volume control') and make sure that "Wave Out" is on and not muted (as it sometimes is by default - though I have no clue why).
Then, In XP, you should have all your recording apps picking up sound from the 'wave out' bus you have selected in that application's sound I/O options.
I can only say this for SB/Emu-based sound cards and Analogue Devices Cards (ASUS Mother Board Standard SoundMax). Other weird-type cards I wouldn't know about - but I know that using the free KX Drivers has helped many people who have had such worries, so you could try them as well.
I have used KX's 'Sound Blaster Live' faux drivers and was more than pleased with both the Asio V2.0 support and the latency. In fact, they were much better with much lower latency than the spammed-up, stupid crap drivers from Creative/SB anyway - even with Asio. Creative actually - at one point - was recommending that their drivers were all screwed up and to try others (I know but it's really true). This is the reason that the KX Project people made their replacement drivers in the first place.
The KX drivers also had no problems at all with Vienna or any other native SB Live programs - important if you're into making sound fonts and so forth.
Did that help?

X0XR0X, I have a terratec EWX 24/96 soundcard. I tried fiddling with driver as you decribed but couldn't get anything working. I don't think my soundcard has an onboard dsp mixer like audigy/soundblasters do.
Silent223, virtual audio cable looks to be what I need.... but I can't see the input end of the cable in EnergyXT
looks like I'm headed over to the EnergyXT forum
thanks to both of you for the help

Yeah, unfortunately, that may be the best thing for you to do. But make sure you visit your specific sound card manufacturer's site and read up. Audio path channeling is commonly available to most apps from most cards these days, so make sure you have tried everything. Other than that, you might want to pick up an SB or other EMU10K1 or 10K2-based sound card, which will give you the ability you hereinafter and hence forth so righteously and meritoriously seeketh.ezza wrote:X0XR0X, I have a terratec EWX 24/96 soundcard. creamware cards do this easily - in fact it's one of the big strengths. you have a virtual environment where you can route anything to anything else simply by moving virtual patch cables

Yep - I definitely want to try one of them one day.Cabinfever wrote:creamware cards do this easily - in fact it's one of the big strengths. you have a virtual environment where you can route anything to anything else simply by moving virtual patch cables

Just looked at the magix studio site.
It says it handles VST.It was the 2004 deluxe version.
Did I miss something?

Magix Music Studio 2004 is actually 2 programmes - Midi Studio and Audio Studio. The prog I want to use as my main environment is Audio Studio which does not support VSTi at all and VST effects through a wrapper.
Midi Studio supports supports VSTi but the audio engine, mixer and routing are not anywhere near as good.

The EWX does have it-it's called the wave recording mixer in most music apps' input list.ezza wrote:X0XR0X, I have a terratec EWX 24/96 soundcard. In fact there is a digitalmixer on the ewx 24/96 -
but you wont get more than 2 wave streams ( with the phase 88 - 88 MT you´ll have 10 of them in windows )with this card . the digitalmixer gives you direct monitoring of the inputs + outputs.
but normally - if your applications are using direct sound drivers - there should be no problem with the recording from one app to another.
be sure that your driverversion is the same version as the controlpanel ! check this in the " about " menu of your Controlpanel !
