Audacity and APE files

I read that Audacity can support APE files but only if you have installed FFmpeg. This was on Windows though - anyone know if I can do this on Mac too? I took a look at the FFmpeg site but it seems there are just uncompiled files to download - I haven't a clue about how to get a version working for Mac if it will at all:

any other options for converting APE to a more Mac friendly format?
