Burning cd/dvds can be a nightmare.
There are two gold standards when it comes to this.
The first is Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.80 FREE:

Ashampoo is great for just burning cds and dvds for backup.
Imgburn is perfect for burning cds/dvds from .iso.
It never fails. I have spent months and months checking this shit out.
Imgburn burns .iso files perfectly. Linux after Linux it works.
I don't use it for windows copying files stuff - Ashampoo does that.
But Imgburn works just right for .iso, if you want to check it out go to any Linux forum and see - they always recommend it.

That sounds a lot like a failure of the DVD drive. Maybe the laser is dirty or out of alignment.junebug wrote:it's still sating no disc whenever i try to burn ANYTHING.

One of my DVD drives has gone (now disabled) and the Writer is in its final days, gives me all sorts of problems. I figured they are worn out but it might be real time scanning that is part of the problem as explained on the ehow page as both the DVD failure and real time scanning came at the tail end of last year.
Of course there are a myriad of things that it could be, so I hope I'm not sending you on a wild goose chase with these.
If it all gets too much, perhaps it is time to buy an external DVD writer.

My burners die every couple of years, last one burned cd's with CDBurnerXp but the 1st track didn't play. For a desktop, a Lite-on dvd burner is about $40.

Yeah if its not burning or reading discs right with any program or recognizing the discs, then then the drive has died. It simply happens. I have probably went through about 5 disc burning drives in about 15 years. If it's a very old Dell, and you want to replace the drive, make sure it is either a PATA (parallel, with the wide grey ribbon that connects to the motherboard) connection, or if it is relatively newer in the past 6 years or so, it might be a SATA connection (Serial, the thinner cable that easily connects to the motherboard). Like people have said you can get them relatively cheap for about $40 from places like www.Newegg.com I bought a $40 Lite-On dvd burner drive from them about 6 years ago and it is still working fine.
Although with the advent of mass portable storage like thumb drives, portable hard drives and iPod mp3 players/phones, I am rarely burning dvds/cds unless it's for backup, or I want a new mp3 cd to quickly listen to in my car without the hassle of plugging my phone into the car radio's aux input. My old Ford Fusion had a 6 disc mp3 cd player. I rarely used an external mp3 player. My stock Honda Accord now only has the one disc, but I still use that more than an external mp3 player. It lets me absorb the music and albums more that way instead of quickly changing through random songs. I don't like to mess around with my phone and be a distracted driver like that anyway.

Yeah, i've tried everything and i'm pretty much over it at this point.
my mom harldy ever wants to back up discs for the car anyhow, so is really isn't that concerned. i explained to her how she could get a new external USB plug-and-play burner on ebay for about $16.00 and she doesnt even care enough about it to be interested.... so thanks again for all your suggestions, guys!!
