I am trying out Live 8 as an alternative to Logic (since CPU spikes are the order of the day since upgrading to Snow Leopard).

Live is really a capable environment. But editing MIDI data seems to be unnecessarily hard sometimes. For example, bringing up the MIDI clip and zooming in, I notice that the bar numbers don't always match up to the bar numbers in the Arrange View's timeline.

Switching back and forth between the Arrange View timeline and finding points in the MIDI clip view isn't very straightforward. Frequently I have to struggle to find the spot in the MIDI clip where my cursor is in the timeline or vise-versa.

Anyone understand sort of what I mean? Is there some sort of workflow thing I am not quite getting?

To find the cursor you can just click, when in clip mode, inside the bottom right little display showing the clip, right on the cursors line and you there!
Or if you are I play mode just hit Ctrl+F (on PC) and you get the cursor right in the middle of your clip.
About the clip not having the same numbers in sync as the timeline it seems strange...

You know I was thinking about this this morning. Was wondering myself. I meant to try to figure it out but got distracted. Actually it was audio but I think we are thinking of the same thing. I assume there must be a reason. I'm gonna go and ponder on this now.

But, just let me say, despite this, or maybe even because of it, Live is fantastic to use.

Ok just had a look because this is the sort of stuff you do without thinking so cant explain without checking. With Midi it's a bit different to what I was thinking. The Midi Editor shows the loop length that was created in Session view, eg a bar. The arrange window shows it dragged out, and the loop there bears no relation to the original loop or any bit you have looped in the window. So you can start with a 1 bar loop in Session, dump it in Arrange, drag it out. Loop bars 9-16, and in the clip view, loop a tiny section of the original. So no, they don't correspond. If you have zoomed in, follow liquid's advice. That little Clip Overview window is good because you can scroll and zoom at the same time, drag vertically to zoom and horizontally to scroll. There is one at the top of Arrange as well.
