Cool! Good to know.
Actually the snippet . WAV I got from Brams ol' Cyanide is pretty damn cool, so I might just give back to him 'raw in the face'.

Basicaly : Try stopping yourself from using stuff that we'll be able to hear as other people's pluginsmilque_dx wrote: #1) So, we can *only* use pitch and time modulations (i'll consider "cuts" time modulations here)?
#2) What else, aside from EQ and compression, do you consider basic DAW functionality? Should this be taken as anything the DAW will do without needing a plugin?
We're not using those rules to piss people off, but rather to force you to think creative... I'm sure you can load the samples in a sampler and do things with them, as long as we can hear you're using the samples!
Try to avoid using any other creative effects than the ones we're "supplying" you.
Yeah, this is a bit of a problem and I'm sad to say that we didn't really think about thismilque_dx wrote: #3) We mac users seem to be at a distinct disadvantage, as the VAST majority of the sound generating SE plugins are PC only (rez synth by destroyfx is the only one I know of that works in OSX). Was this taken into consideration?
DMI's stuff works on mac os9, but not on OSX, I'm afraid... (allthough I'm not sure of that)
I'm sorry for this, but it's how it is... You'll have to be extra creative! Heck, you have a mac, you're by definition more creative than us PC people.

Well bram, the main reason I posted questions #1 and #2 directly relate to #3. I was really just curious whether soundhack could really be used to the best of its ability, since it is simply an audio editor (just one with some very unique spectral operations that normal people would have to use plugins for). These operations, being FFT based and all, effect the time and pitch domains, so I take it those are ok - right?
Since 40% or more of the tools we're allowed to use are PC only, I figured it would be a tiny bone to throw us creative mac people.
If not, that's ok.. I'll still play - but a game isn't fun unless one understands the rules 100%.
Oh, and I take it SuperCollider is out as well, eh?

well, you can some prety advanced stuff with FFT, but we're cool with timestretching and pitch-shifting, sure...
*sigh* not easy to make a strict book of guidelines as there are so many options... Some people think the rules are too harsh and strict, some -like you
- think they are not strict enough

And how tight is the 3 Minute guideline of the rules Bram? My piece is currently at 3min 11fps, and I'm trying to bring it 'under the wire' hopefully?
But if one's 'a bit' over, is that okay? (I know - and someone will be 10sec over then, and someone will ask if they can have 4min, or 4:30 cause they love their Granulator loop so much...
)
Sorry - one last dumb question if I may? I can ONLY use Smart Electronix stuff in my song? I used WaspXT for a bass line and Galactix for chords. Is that a no-no? Galactix is very cool, but I don't know what else of SE gear I can use for a D&B bassline?
(I know, I know - make a bass patch on Galactix, right?
)

so basically.. we cant use any drum samples..
and there are NO SE drum synths... so we have to resort to chip/screechy drums sampled from the raw data eh?

VitaminD:
what about one ping only for drum sounds!
And surely you can find some nice hihats and drum-sounds in the binary noises. C'mon guys, use some creativeness, that's why this competition is here!
J Dub:
WaspXT => tsk tsk tsk, shame on you!!! You shouldn't even have LOADED it.
3" => UNDER 3", dammit.

Strict rules would have been:
only use Smartelectronix Plugins as samples in Fasttracker II without allowing any external mangling in your favourite sound editor
The rules now are pretty open for anything.

One question...
Can i use i.e. Kontakt as sampler to play the RAW samples?
PJ
PS: a nice competition for programmers would be to make your plugin sound as good as possible, when loading it as RAW.

Back to the drawing board.
So TOTALLY Smart Electronix gear, and the ONLY samples to be used are from Smart Electronix .DLL's converted to RAW PCM .WAV - no samples of CD/live voices, beats, synths, guitars, etc. Only Smart effects to process Smart synths and/or Smart RAW samples.
I think I get it now...

Fun fun fun!.. We used to do this back in the tracker days where we'd have 1 hour compos that should include at least one system file as a sample. I personally remember liking dos textfiles
This should be great for looking up SE stuff. This baby is gonna be raw wav's through emulator-x. Should be a great oppurtunity to get creative with emu-x as well, and oh splifter, resolator and what not that they're called
Awesome compo, cheers!
