New granular processor, MMultiBandGranular!

So far i'm really liking the demo.

Wondering if anyone can give me honest comparison with Pad Shop Pro.

I'm certainly in the market for what Melda's Granular plug-in will do but I also really like the smooth Padshop Pro sounds I'm hearing from Sampleconstruct.

My work is more experimental / soundscapey so a bit of both won't go astray... alas I doubt I can afford both.

Is it possible to do silky smooth sounds with Melda's Granular plug? So far i've only been able to make rattley, grainy sounds.

I cannot compar it to Padshop, but you can definitely make smooth sounds with it - usually higher voice number does this. Check the audio examples

If you really want a grain monster get crusherX which for me is the absolute leader when it comes to granulation but that costs about 10 times as much as the Melda Plug-In which I think has some special features but can't be compared to Padshop really which is based on a different concept of multiple, simultaneous grain streams. Also Padshop has a synth layout and Melda's is an effect. Both are good for experimental textures as well as smooth grain delight, Melda uses about 20 times the CPU power though

Just found, that for huge grains (like a second and more) it temporarily increases CPU usage. That should be optimizable. Otherwise I didn't get over 20% even on i7 macbook pro.

this hi cpu stress makes it difficult to use it in a live situation with some vst plugins in the audio path.
It is a pity !

One more question: is there a way to midi control its bypass ?
I didn't find it.

That would be useful to save some cpu when it's not in use.

Thanks for the responses. I did end up getting the Melda Creative Bundle. Crusher X for Mac is a somewhat beyond my price range at the moment. I tried a demo many years ago and it certainly approached a more Curtis Roads level of serious granulation but I couldn't work it out either.
If Padshop Pro had a demo i'd certainly try it. It reminds me of a decent iPad synth I have called Grain Science. Melda has it's uses though definately not live. I'm finding it best for production - freezing tracks in Reaper once they sound good.

To you people who are reporting high cpu, what os and host are you using ?

The cpu did not bother me in reaper/windows, with one band it stays at maybe 3% / 3% on an older intel quadcore.

I would not have a problem using the granulator in a live setup (with one or two bands only though).

Of course, 5 bands with the two voices and maxed "copies" settings will give 16% / 16% cpu...

Also the "cpu protection" type in the settings will have a huge impact on cpu especially when modulating stuff.

So i've got a Reaper session that has been glitching out unless I freeze the tracks.
I have 8 tracks - 48k/24bit.
On one tracks I have Melda's Delay, Saturator and Granular. One band on all... One voice, One tap, no Harmonics, 1x upsampling. Nomad British EQ after them all.
With no other FX that lot play fine.
But I also have another track with Granular, Harmonizer and the Nomad British EQ. Still only one band, One voice, 1x upsampling etc. When the track peaks the grains start to glitch out weirdly, timing goes out and the transport flashes red. When idle the cpu sits around 20%... when the glitches happen it is over 25%.

I don't think this is particularly unusual... but I certainly wouldn't use Melda Granular for live work unless it was the only plugin.

Well, you CPU isn't really fast at all. But it should handle that. Right now this is the problem - big grains must often be "preprocessed", so there are high-CPU peaks in otherwise pretty low CPU consumption. This is why each host shows CPU usage differently. In next version, this should be hopefully optimized and the glitches should be therefore removed.

This is what I wanted to understand: if you consider is worth to improve this high cpu or not.
Now, this is enough to convince me to take advantage of the promo, buy it and wait for your improvements.

tried out the demo and I really liked it. I loaded it on my macbook that I use for work (newish but not beefed up at all); in a new garageband project with one track (no other plugins). jesus what a CPU hit on some of those presets. it brought garageband to it's knees a few times.

that said, it sounds amazing. I took a piano loop, loaded a preset and started tweaking and it was really nice sounding. very fluid. I will be buying this one for sure and I will gladly give into the work arounds that it may entail. if nothing else, it will be worth it to do sound design and create interesting bits of audio for later use. great price. I actually qualify for a student discount (50% off), but that would just be greedy.
