guiro sound2012-07-25T18:25:38+00:00Anyone know of any vst or anything that I can use to make a nice guiro sound?
I am using logic 9.
Once I sort out some recording gear i can record but in the mean time...

For synths; I imagine Chromaphone could come pretty close to that sound; perhaps with one or more MIDI effects (velocity controlled note repeater?) before it to get the scraping effect. http://www.applied-acoustics.com/chromaphone/overview/
On the other hand, though it will not have the physically-modelled qualities of Chromaphone; Aalto has an envelope with a repeat setting that can be modulated by other control sources in the synth, and I'm wondering if it couldn't approximate the scraping sound. http://madronalabs.com/aalto/
You've peaked my curiosity!
If I have time today I'm going to try to make one of those synths produce that sound, or something close to it (I own them).
However; they have demo versions if you want to try too.
...
I'm thinking (going the synth route - as opposed to a sampler), that some MIDI effects may be in order though. I'll try working with the synths in Bidule which may help (MIDI effect heaven for me). http://www.plogue.com/
A great resource for free MIDI effect plugins is the Piz MIDI plugin collection. http://www.thepiz.org/plugins/?p=pizmidi
Not sure what's necessary, but it's an interesting project.
Curious to see what other people suggest.
I can also imagine that a sampler may be a good (or the best?) route to go.
I suspect that Kontakt has the chops to deliver, with velocity layers, the right samples, * and it's scripting.
I'd bet that someone has already done something similar with it.
I'm pretty new to the world of synths but I am very interested to learn
Im very interested to know what approach you use and how you go about making this sound. I'm thinking more towards the sound in Gimee Shelter than Man Who Sold the World if you know these sounds. But at the moment i'm definitely on the beggar side rather than chooser
my moms family is Puerto Rican and everyone had one of these. great sound. you can buy one pretty cheap in Latin neighborhoods. I made a recording once where I took a spiral bound notebook and played the metal spiral thing like a guiro, using a plastic comb. sounded fine in the recording.
just wanted to let you know I'm still thinking about your question.
I didn't have much time yesterday, but did manage to get Aalto making something close to a guiro sound before I crashed (fell asleep) for the night.
No MIDI effects were needed; as Aalto has a built in sequencer (the rate of which can be modulated by MIDI note velocity or pitch) that I used to modulate the gate envelope repeat rate. With a bit of tweaking I got something amazingly close to the scraping action, though the tone was still a bit synthetic-like.
I'd like to do some more tweaking (hopefully today) to get it sounding less synthetic and will post some example sounds.
I actually have a guiro somewhere and want to try to find it for sound reference.
I'd still like to try to get the sound in Chromaphone; which I think should be more realistic (tonally) than Aalto.
I'm also thinking of making a custom guiro instrument in Bidule using samples from my guiro if I can find it.
If you've already found a solution that's great,
but you inspired me so I'm going to work on it anyway
I downloaded the samples and will try to get em going in logic.
I imagine there will be a bit of interest in a good guiro sound. I was just listening to some old wu tang records and there is a guiro on that as well.
Like i said I'm more or less a total noob with music making on computer so any help/advice is gratefully received
