I can't try it, or buy it, as I don't have an iLok nor will I ever own an iLok not that I mind dongles but I have my eLicenser and I don't want another one.

So, are there any good alternatives to this ? Non UAD too.

Black76 maybe ? I think Stillwell's the Rocket might qualify, but that doesn't work in VST2.4 form and the VST3 is in beta.

Anything else ?

DC8C, very similar to CL2B on snap mode(DC8C), and Bombardier in Bomb mode very similar to FET compressor in all buttons mode, very similar, you have to set the RMS attack to around 0.2-0.10 with a lot of soft knee in lift mode. The bombardier is similar to the API 2500 because the 5 modes are equivalent to the thrust mode. bombardier is the alternative I actually use to the FET compressor but the only thing is it takes twice as much processor power up. In fact DC8C can do the very same with the 4 modes it has. Also the Thrillseeker from bootsie is another, its very smooth so I would liken it most to the TLA 100 they have just released, if you take a look the designs are almost identical on the front panels, although thrillseeker has additional attack and release settings but is very heavily program dependant which makes it ideal for instruments and stuff. The Density mark 3 is also incredibly similar to the waves puigtec 760 emulation, which really amazes me considering the money difference but the dynamics are nearly identical, albeit with different settings. Much more rounder and softer attack as well

WEll I have the Black 76 which I use a lot, but I fancied an alternative with a different flavour and well it seems i've found one thanks to Trak

DC8C , this looks like a lot of fun.

The FET Compressor emu in Compassion is pretty cool too, especially on kicks.

Thanks for the suggestions ppl.

What do you mean by The Rocket doesn't work in vst2.4? I use it all the time in Reaper 64-bit. Just wondering.

When I read the title, I thought instantly of Stillwell Bombardier. But maybe you're not fond of buying more Stillwell stuff?

I don't know that FET comp. plugin, but have to scond DC8C being amazing. :)

The rocket works as a compressor fine, but it doesnt' work when sidechaining in Cubase using the Quadro channel method. The trigger signal passes through it instead of just triggering the compressor, so you can hear it, so it acts like a send/return. Dev denied it even though I made a video example of it proving it. So I left it well alone, and don't want to go back unless he gets the VST3 version perfected.

Ah ok, in reaper it works for sidechaining but yeah, that's not much of a help for you. Sorry about that.

On with the search for the softube FET replacement; I have to second that DC8C is a pretty good comp.

Yeah the dev said it works fine in Reaper, and he couldn't get a copy of Cubase to test his stuff in so he couldn't check it. But if the VST3 version ever gets through beta, i'll get it again then. Worth it for the speed when sidechaining.

Believe me, get hold of the IK T-RackS stuff!

Don't get polarized by the names and GUIs, try them and decide for yourself which one you want. I have all the compressors and I love them! The only one I hardly use is the Fairchild, because it's very 'special'.
Not 'special' in a short bus sort-of way, but more like 'unique'.

The Black 76 is a flexible and fast beast on just about everything, the White 2A is super easy to set up and 'sound right', the Opto is both easy and still flexible enough to use on all sorts of material.

I doubt you'd be disappointed by one (or all) of these.

Or you could of course buy Stripbus which does all that and much much more for a third of the price... ;)
