In my humblest opinion, artists should be making their art freely without thinking about getting into a specific "genre" of whatever they do, or thinking about getting the material benefits for it of any kind. That would make the music far more diverse.
Listen to this, for example: What "genre" is this? I always loved "Japan". IMO there are only five "genres" - electronic music, rock music, classical music, jazz music and ethno music. Have I missed some "genre"?
Don't get constrained by "Genres". That's my first rule. Just make it, and let others worry about "genres".

The point, my point, is that yesteryear was more of a mixed bag...for a while at least. '65-'85 saw a lot of good popular music that was embraced by the infamous powers-that-be in the music industry. It's been MUCH more sporadic since then. I think Cher's (third?) comeback actually sent some kind of viral wave through the music industry that killed off any hope of respectable talent emerging into the "mainstream" scene for at least twenty years on.
