MikeCL wrote:Well one I want to use it's a little over 6 GB but that's another question about that.. like how do you switch from one instrument from the other during a live session? It takes about 10-15 seconds to load (might be faster with the SSD)

Reaper is free? But with what limitations?
No limitations. Reaper's demo is fully functional.

And sorry, I don't know anything about Forte offhand. But whatever you did to set up VB3, do it for another instrument.

And if you have 6 GB free you have enough space to install 300 Poly-Ana sized instruments. :)

hehe I was going to install Alicia's keys but I'm not going to install it on the same hard drive as the OS that could bring up a bunch of issues during live use.

I will try messing around with it early tomorrow before they start.

It won't be a problem. The only thing you might want to run off another driver than your system is sample libraries. Synths like VB3 and Mr. Ray and Poly-Ana don't stream their sounds from disk, they generate them on the fly from pure logic. So it doesn't matter what disk they're on, when they're running they're 100% in RAM.

EDIT: Oh, I see Alicia's keys is a sample set, so yes, you might want that on another drive.

But I'm suggesting synths. VB3 is a synth, not a sampler. It makes up all it's sound from nothing but math, on the fly. It doesn't look it up off disk like sample sets do.

For example, VB3.dll is only ONE MB in size! And most of that is graphics! Poly-Ana is only 10 MB because it's full of pictures of the knobs in all their different rotation states. The actual DSP part of the code is minuscule, as is the memory footprint of the running process.

Yeah I know about the sampler and synth thing stuff like that is small enough that it can be put on the same drive and all, the SSD is just a personal thing.

When I get a little free time today I will try reaper on the laptop here but I don't have my MIDI cable here so I can only just see how the program is and where the settings are and so forth.

I don't see how I can add VB3 to reaper? I assume you go under add new instrument however I don't see VB3 under the list.

Are you x64? Either way it doesn't matter, just go to preferences/vst and add the path your vst/s are in. If you are x64 you can have both the x86 and x64 paths and reaper will bridge :)

You might need to point Reaper to your vstplugins directory in Options | Preferences | Plug-Ins | VST

Use the Add button to add a new directory. And then hit Rescan.

That should do it. (I assume you've found "Insert Virtual Instrument on New Track" when you right click on the track panel to the left.)

Ok got it :) Say if I closed VB3 but it's still inserted in a new track how do I bring up VB3 again? It seems a tad clunky but since my USB audio device is not with me I can't test to see if I have the same issue.

Reaper is not crash prone is it? I would normally test software for a few weeks before using them in a live manner in front of like 300 people.. that's the last thing I need to happen is it crashing on a solo!

The instrument will show up as an insert on the track. Drag the horizontal bar up to give expand the mixer tracks along the bottom if the inserts aren't showing.

You can also click the FX button on the track's view on the left.

It should show the plug-in's interface by default. Unless you changed to option in VST preferences to "Default VST to generic UI (instead of plug-in UI)". What do you see instead, a list of sliders? Or are you not seeing any plug-in interface at all?

Make sure you're running the x86 version of Reaper, not the x64. (There's no point as VB3 is x86 only. Even if you're on an x64 OS. Though Reaper does have one of the better "bit bridges" I've seen, in the sense that it actually works.)

I just noticed my copy of VB3 seems to have lost its authorization. That's odd, I guess you have to re-auth it once in a while. Can't say I much like that, what if I was in the middle of a gig or recording session? :(

right now I don't see any interface at all because I closed it thinking it would be easy to find again.. Hopfully I can do away with that huge white space to the left of the VB3 interface screen.. something related to Reaper settings.

Yes you can, just close it and re-open the interface. (Just click on the plug-in where you see it on the track insert.) That space to the side is for when you want to navigate a whole stack of plug-ins on a track. Yes, it's annoying. You can change a preference so it won't bring up the full plug-in window. Preferences | Plug-Ins | Autofloat newly created FX windows. Check that.

ok got the solved thanks, but now I have another issue the built in midi keyboard (alt+b) for some reason with the reverb turned off I still hear it? Like none of the settings seem to take effect using the midi keyboard in the program.
