Oh wow - so if I got hold of a copy of Snow Leopard (I need it for some older apps) could I run that from an external HD too?

Did the upgrade and so far so good. Permissions are better now and I was finally able to register and use DrumCore Free.

Sad to say I'm seeing some issues with Logic after the OS upgrade, specifically the cursor icon being very inconsistent, especially when mousing over the Inspector area, and also when trying to grab the edge of a clip to re-size. Sometimes it doesn't change at all and I can't do it.

When I bring up the loop browser and mouse over that, the cursor turns into 'text tool' mode.

Anyone else seeing things like this? A bit discouraging.

I updated as soon as it came out. Only issue I've encountered is slow mouse response in Mail app. Click on a message or mailbox and it takes up to a second to appear. It was a lot snappier in Lion. May have something to do with iCloud synchronization but I'm only guessing.

This is a 2007 model iMac C2D 2GHz so it's a dinosaur.

If you were running the webserver, you'll have to configure the httpd.conf again, as it will be replaced by the default Apache config file.

Yes

Just boot the installer from the DVD (I guess) and point out to the to the external HD.

If you're up for exploring alternatives, you might want to give Mozilla Thunderbird a look. Very easy to set up your own mail filters and folders and just a very well thought out application all around.

The mail app in OS-X is actually pretty good, I prefer it to Thunderbird, which I used on Windows (and miles better than Outlook). The only annoyance I have with it is sometimes it doesn't play nice with my work exchange server maibox - it tends to freeze on occasion. I sure hope they have fixed that in the new OS.

I prefer the default Mail.app too, but everyone's different. FYI so far Mail works with our Exchange 2010 server.

Is there a list of plugins/software that work for 10.8? I'm wondering if I should upgrade to 10.7 instead to minimize the plugins that won't work.
