Just like porn, there are so many great free plug-ins on the net why pay for them?

Well, at least that's my opinion. I'm fairly tight on money but even if I had more dough I'm not sure I'd buy a lot of plug-ins. This isn't so much a slam against established pay developers but more of a pat on the back for the freeware guys that are coming out with some really great stuff!
I also know that I, being your average bedroom recording guy, probably won't notice a big difference in the overall sound quality of my songs. In other words, plug-ins (free or pay) are not what's holding my songs back.
YMMV! Anyone hold a similar view as I do?

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

HA!
But seriously....
I agree. Even on a Mac, one could argue you don't need much more than what'a available free, given a decent DAW.
I don't think you could necessarily produce something specific with free kit (for example, an orchestral soundtrack lacking a decent library), but for the average bedroom producer, creativity trumps. Just look at what musik4machines just did with a modem!

The psychology of "free" and what it does to our perception of quality is problematic. You DO get what you pay for, but not because it's necessarily better; more-so, because you VALUE what you pay for more
That said, I use both

For the same reason people pay for porn. There are some great free plugins, but sometimes there's something specific that one is looking for.

I have paid for plugins, and I also use freebies. There are things that only commercial plugins do or do better than the free ones.
I don't pay for porn.

Yup, the porn you see on the usual sites is either degraded (in terms of picture quality; let's not go into the scripts and dialogs) "demo" excerpts or illegally ripped and uploaded stuff, that hasn't been removed yet.
Sooo... I don't think free plugins are quite the same...

An experienced musician can hear the difference between DIVA and any free synth out there. I love SQ-8L and miniSID but those are the exceptions.blueman wrote:The psychology of "free" and what it does to our perception of quality is problematic. you know what. some free stuff now is just amazing. and at the same time plugins that are sold for cheap are getting better than those sold for 10 times that price. its finding the good out of all the bad. I use both
