Splitting phrases

Is it possible to split a phrase? If not, consider this an FR. Suggested behavior: Press "S" and the selected phrase will be split at the playhead position. Both phrases should carry on the current variations of the phrase, but be separately editable after split, of course.

Right click the phrase and choose split.
The variations are lost... I don't think it would be possible to ensure that all variations would function on the material in the same way after the split, for instance mirror would not give you the desired result when both sides of the split phrase are mirrored individually.
You need to render the variations down if you want to split or glue phrases.

Thanks a bunch. That makes a lot of sense.CaseyJames wrote:Right click the phrase and choose split.

The possibility to split phrases only vertically at the playhead is too limited. It should be possible to select some notes within a phrase and extract them into a new phrase.

Right, that is a very good feature request!
This is not possible at the moment only in an awkward way.
Thanks,
Attila

This "awkward way" is probably the way I currently use: I split the phrases vertically, then I select the part of interest and copy it and then I delete those notes in this new phrase which I don't want to have there. It is doable but way too cumbersome if one has to process many data in this way.
BTW: Do I ask for too much, if I want this too: Automated phrase splitting?

What do you mean by 'Automated phrase splitting' ?
It would be the simplest if there was a context popup menu item 'Move Notes To New Phrase' in Note editing mode. Then you can select any number of notes and move out of the original phrase. I promise this will be in V2
Thanks,
Attila

I mean automated phrase splitting at musically meaningful points at the MIDI import and to have some options to optimize the splitpoints after the import without the need of fiddling around at every single phrase.musicdevelopments wrote:What do you mean by 'Automated phrase splitting' ?
When I import MIDI tracks I get very often endless long phrases. Sometimes one phrase for a whole track. Typically phrases are splitted after several measures and the split points are rarely at musical meaningful points. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I don't see any parameters to influence that. The software should automatically recognize typical musical motifs, licks, arpeggios, rhythmical patterns and form appropriate phrases from them. I'm not sure, maybe the current algorithms for the phrase splitting at the MIDI import are intended to do that already. But if that's the case then they are relatively weak.
Thanks, this will be very helpful. But it would be better, if it could be done in the phrase editing mode. Otherwise one would have to switch constantly between phrase editing and note editing mode.musicdevelopments wrote:It would be the simplest if there was a context popup menu item 'Move Notes To New Phrase' in Note editing mode. BTW: Didn't you want to post some screenshots of V2.

Thank you, understood.
I will post screenshots as soon as the UI looks almost final.
Thanks,
Attila
The switch is just pressing TAB. We tried to unify the Phrase and Note editing modes, but it is not possible. In Phrase editing mode you can see the final rendered phrase. In Note editing mode the original phrase is shown because it is not (always) possible to edit a transformed phrase. The Phrase editing mode is already 'crowded' because you can also directly move/add/remove chord notes under the phrases using Ctrl-Shift.But it would be better, if it could be done in the phrase editing mode.

Is this implemented now? I can't find it. Is there still a note editing mode anyway?musicdevelopments wrote:It would be the simplest if there was a context popup menu item 'Move Notes To New Phrase' in Note editing mode. Yes, you can split phrases. For this you need to open the phrase inspector: right click on the workspace or on a phrase, select the second icon (gear) at the top. Select a phrase to split and move the time pointer to the split position. You will find a "Divide 'phrase name' At <position>" button among the actions.
The nicest thing is that you can do all this (select phrase, set timeline position and open inspector) with a single right click inside the phrase near the split point.
If you want to split multiple phrases, just leave the inspector open and right click at the next split position inside the next phrase.

Yes, of course I know that I can split a phrase vertical at the time line. This was already possible at V1.
But the suggestion of my post from last year was that I wanted to select any notes within a phrase and extract them into a new phrase. This would make it possible for instance to split a phrase with chords in separate voice phrases (horizontal split).
Last year you agreed with me that this is a good idea and promised to implement a feature "Move Notes to New Phrase" in Version 2. Now I have tried to find this new feature, but obviously it is not there.
