Hey, everyone! I was wondering (this may sound ridiculous) if there is a FREE audio effect out there that will allow me to pan audio (a track, clip, or whatever) based on the frequency? It sounds quite far-fetched, I know, but if it does exist, PLEASE tell me!

Sounds like you might be using Ableton. Have you tried making an Audio Effects Rack with a chain for each frequency range you wish to pan to a particular channel?

I'm unfortunately using Cakewalk Music Creator 3, which from my understanding is a bit far from Abelton. Thanks for the quick reply, though, and maybe that knowledge will be useful for some part of this.

not sure if it's 100 % what you're looking for but give the "Spectral Autopan" from Anarchy Sound Software a spin and see what you think. Windows only, you didn't mention anything about OS. I find it slightly confusing to set up, but I've only tried it once so it'll probably start making a whole lot more sense given just a little bit of time. It's not at all that complicated, just a kind of unfamiliar way of setting things up I guess...

Hi dizzyd101,
it DOES exist - or the possibility to wire it up as a plugin does.

One free option I can think of for doing that and having it as a plugin is SonicBirth, but that's Mac only.

Bidule (Windows and Mac) can also do it, but you'll have to pay for the plugin version.

I suspect you may want to look at the VST version of Usine.

The free version looks like it can be wired up to do that.

A second vote for Spectral Autopan. If I understand your description of the effect you're looking for, it does exactly what you want to do with modulation capabilities as a bonus.

Wow, just took a look at Spectral Autopan - looks great. No Mac version; so I can't try it, but looking at it makes me want to wire up something similar in Bidule or SonicBirth. Cool.
