Picking a dj name... how hard can it be??

Hi,
I tried for a while now to pick a serious dj name but it feels like it's impossible. Every suggestion I've come up with either sucks or is taken already....
But I've got one name now which I like... but I just did a search on discogs and there I found a greek (I think) trance producer with the same name who has released one song about 7 years ago.
Does this mean that I can't use the name that I've come up with? Of course it would be best to use a name that is totally unique but for me it seems impossible to get a unique name that sounds good aswell.

You aren't alone in this. It took me over 15 years (yep) to find a name I felt happy with. The moment I thought of it, I knew instantly it was the one. None of the thinking about it or the "will this do?" and using it half-heartedly for a while stuff.
I know a few UK bands have had to change their names following action by other groups, but when you look on Discogs nearly every name seems to have multiple takers, all with releases under their belt. I guess it just depends on how active/litigious your doppelganger is.

A few months ago, I posted a very similar thread on another forum regarding artist names. I'm working on a new side project that is quite different from my past styles and really wanted a new artist name to go along with it, but it is impossible to come up with something that isn't already taken, or just plain sucks.

As awful as it sounds, I'd say how much money they have is also a factor. I doubt initiating legal action is cheap or easy. If they have the financial backing of a major label or a big indie looking to protect their interests, be wary.

Hmm, how hard is it really to create a unique name? In the case of that Greek whatever DJ name, change one letter and you are all go.

Create a unique name is really easy, but to create unique name that's easy to remember and sounds good - that's a different story...ksandvik wrote:Hmm, how hard is it really to create a unique name? In the case of that Greek whatever DJ name, change one letter and you are all go.

I'd recommend to use your real name. This way you can save some money registering trademarks and probably avoiding copyright issues (unless you are rich and don't really care about that)

I have no interest in DJing but funnily enough my first and middle initials are DJ, last initial G.george wrote:I'd recommend to use your real name. This way you can save some money registering trademarks and probably avoiding copyright issues (unless you are rich and don't really care about that)
So technically I could called myself DJ G and still be using my real name.
DJ G in Da House! (insert DJ emoticon here).

DJ Breaded Cat (it's a hot new meme, all the kids are doing it).
I guess that's another way of saying, I have nothing useful to bring to this discussion.
