IIRC, Einstein made most of his discoveries by bumbling along, so that's all right then. ;)

I think it's great to get early infos and to hear the different stages of development. As we found out in a recent thread, the mean age on KVR is about 42, so we are all adults who have learned that all good things come to those who wait. Right? Right?

Since Antti was never able to fix those damn Frantic bugs i'm in desperate need of a substitute. "The drop" sounds just like that :)

Can you stop my bleeding pleeeze?

Hehe, well I don't actually have to make too many discoveries. All the maths was sorted out quite some time ago by really smart people. Circuit simulation really works well and has done so for a long time. Problem is it just runs too slowly for use in audio. They also do all kinds of whacky things like change the sample rate as soon as the going gets tough, which is also not possible in audio land either. So my job really is to remove all non-essential components from the circuit and model as few as possible while still delivering the decent sound at a constant sample rate. My other job is designing a tool that people will find musical and easy to use, and then make it looks nice in a 3D package.

Hehe, 42 huh? Well I'm 40 so I fit right in :) I'm glad to be as open as possible and let people know some of the processes involved and also share some of the excitement. The wait will be worth it I promise! The Drop ended up being a huge project in terms of completely new algorithms, there is nothing that exists that will sound like it, or do the things it can do in such an elagent and fun to use way.

I'm on it! It's going to be quite a different plugin to Frantic though, so if you just want a replacement in terms of having better tone then that is covered in spades. There is a fixed high pass -> low pass structure, and modulation is kept pretty straight forward, but it's all about how musically it all works together with The Drop. I'm not interested in an arms race on "features" like how many lfos and envelopes there are etc, I want to make a tool that is balanced, easy to get your head around, but hugely creative and inspiring and every knob feels right.

Will Drop have drive knob or maybe several types of distortion to apply directly after filter?

No, The Drop is not a waveshaper plugin, the focus is on the complex non-linearities in the filter core, not on the clipping caused by adding a basic waveshaper after the filter. Such basic waveshapers usually make everything sound flat and horrible.

The problem with basic waveshapers is mostly that the upper frequencies get distorted too much and make everything sound like mud. Many of the great sounding distortion circuits don't distort the top frequencies for various reasons, which is partly why they sound good. Doing such a model will take time and effort and CPU and so will be in a separate plugin.

So, we can expect distortion vst from you in near future? :D Please say yes... :o :)

I never used the LFO, envelope follower and stuff like that - mostly the barebone filter for its awesome sound. What i liked most about it was the grit and noise it introduced in certain modes. Such a pity they let this one die.

The Moog Prodigy model was quite tricky to get right, it took a little longer than expected. Good news is I've had to sort out a chunk of maths I was putting off which allows me to model very large circuits efficiently. This was needed for the Moog Prodigy model as it is a full transistor level model of the entire ladder, the cutoff current generator, and the output buffer stage, as well as loads of other support biasing components. I've put it under the scope again:
