Hi all,

I used the search function but could not find anything like I am looking for, maybe there is not such a thing available, but if there is:

I am looking for a program/plugin that you can point to a folder containing audio files such as songs, loops, samples, etc...and then the program will randomly generate new samples by whatever means, chopping them to new files, combining them in random ways...maybe the program will have settings such as length of new samples, like chop everything to 1 second, for example.

Does anything like this exist already somewhere? I don't know exactly what to search for other than "random sample generator"?

Post

Sounds complex. I doubt something like that exists without SOME form of user interaction/expertise.

Interesting idea though.

I think I have tried something of that ilk and in the last couple of months.
But what was is indeed ?

Well...searched a little on google and found this thread on KVR that I couldn't find with KVR search!!! lol

This does to some extent what I was asking for...I wonder if there is a similar program that can handle more than 1 audio file at a time?

Keep looking. I ran across something very similar to your description in the last 6 months or so. For life of me I can't remember the name. But I am pretty sure it was either a MAX/M4L device or a Reaktor ensemble. You put your own wav files into a specific folder and it would pick slices from different files for playback.

With Reaktor you could do that, but might be quite a massive job. The Reaktor user library probably already has some ensembles doing that though, I would check there if I were you (and own Reaktor)

This might be of interest.

Could be an ensemble, I downloaded all the sampler ens over a few months earlier this year and had forgotten about that approach. And just to add a possible red herring I have epent a lot of time on the web.archive looking for music software. I can picture something like this being available years ago on a site like this, though I could be completely wrong on this.

You can make that with Usine.
You can't always get what you waaaant...

Would love to have Reaktor but budget prohibits it at the moment...

I feel the same way as a lot of the answers here...I ''know'' I have seen this program before but at the time I paid no attention to it, thinking why would I ever need something like that!? lol...

Give me 24 hours, I know I can find it again. I'm pretty confident that I have a link for it somewhere. I came across it while searching for generative apps.

Not sure if it's in the same ball park, but Slix from dlm does a "sample mangle" of sorts.

Mainly for loops though I think

Ableton would do it, but that needs user interaction.

Loopmash in Cbase could too, but same problem.

Petri is the item was refering to. It's made with MAX/MSP. Here's a couple of links:

<edit> Even though it has some similiarities to your initial request I'm not so sure its a solid fit.

The Sampler in this suite might do what you seek as well.

I checked all of those and although they are pretty nice, they aren't exactly what I was looking for...I'll continue to search and I'll post if I find it...
