1.) is there a way to solo more then one track at a time instead of muting every track then the ones I want soloed?

2.) what do I have to do midi wise to trigger a midi track to use the sound of my Nord Lead or Roland JP8000? I know I have to set the Nord or Roland for external midi, but what else in Ableton?

Yes, you can change the behavior in preferences to allow mult selection for solo, or you can hold down the Command (mac) Control (Windows) key when clicking solo buttons

for 2)

I dont really use external synths, but if you look in the instruments list there is an 'external instrument' device. Slap that on a midi track and then in the device you select the midi output to be your synth and the audio from to be whatever input jacks you have the synth hooked up to

Hold down CTRL key then click as many solo button as you like.
