I agree with Massive and Sylenth being where they are but where is Nexus???! and Alchemy should be a lot higher then 10... just my opinion of course :)

Maybe I pay too much attention to Computer Music Magazine, but then again they "responsible" for me getting into music making with Reason few years ago I bought the special issue and there was trance tutorial with Reason... so there I was...

my list would go something like this:

1. Sylenth
2. Nexus
3. Massive
4. Alchemy
5. Absynth
6 - 10 - 100 the rest

Post

Nexus has some great sounds, but it has more in common with a sample library than with a synth.

I get CM for the free stuff. I have little regard for their opinions. Apparently the synths where voted for which gives me an even stronger disregard for the list, after all politicians are voted for too, and we all know what they sound like...

just like Massive! :)

Then you can hear what's REALLY going on inside that sound engine...

But the GUI looks very sexy - in true NI style....

I prefer woman who look great with no makeup at all ...

The FX in Massive are just a mask to hide the imperfections

yeah but its just his opinion that the rug really tied the room together. foot, gun, bang.

As with any ranking like this, there are a bazillion people out there, who actually know the 'correct' top ten. The ten synths reflect in a not to bad way, the state of the art and the most used tools of software synthesis these days. There are some useful tips and tricks for the presented synths, so after all a pretty nice read imho. If X should rank higher than Y or if Z should be included is open to discussion, but some comments here are rather butthurt

I like that video clip...

I know that my comments are not the popular viewpoint - but like stoned Freddie says in that video "Well, that's just your opinion man"

And it is...

And I stand by my comments or I wouldn't have made them

Turn off the FX and the EQ in Massive and see what you've got...

I wondered that too, but I see it in a positive light. Dune did very well since its release in 2010, and it is the only synth we ever made that has been bought by many well-known artists and DJs. Not making it into some top 10 lists means there's plenty of potential left for Dune 2 (which will be a big step forward in terms of features and sound quality). :)

Nice synths, but why 32 bit AU, when 64 bit VST are out since about 2010? The answer: there is no market for mac anymore (otherwise, they'd have done first 64 bit for mac, then for PC).

10-12 years ago everyone who wanted to play music was on mac, studios included. Not nowadays, i guess it is the "i-crap" mania. See macpro production: stuck and perhaps discontinued in a year or two...
Sonar on PC was the first DAW to have a 64 bit beta version available to developers, Logic 64 bit came out years later.

AAS make 4 out of the 5 synths you mention. That's two developers that haven't made 64 bit AU's yet.

BTW I own Live 8 Suite, and the 64 bit beta version has all the native Live AAS instruments working, so native AU 64 bit AAS plug ins are right around the corner. :)
OT: I just realize once things were different, if they haven't made 64 bit AU yet it is because there is no mac interest anymore. No other reason than this, I guess. Macpro discontinued.... And Sylenth1... "Lennard lost the code"?! :hihi: 10 years ago apple was an elite brand for musicians, designers and artists. Not because the mac was special, but only because windows was crap. Today windows 7 is as stable as mountain Lion, offering more at a lower price.

Regarding the CM list: if it is based on votes, it is so clear it is mostly a british audience, voting products like impOSCar :? FXpansion... Where are papen synths, Tone2 synths, Image Line synths, Arturia synths?... It is like when anglo-american magazines like the Rolling Stones make "the best 100 songs ever" or "the best movies ever" and you find only british or american movies ans songs :D ... Landing on Mars

thats a great attitude to have :tu:

also given the amount of synths out there a top ten is only scratching the surface, maybe dune was in the top 20?
well never know, but as you say it leaves room for improvement :)

and more importantly, so long as the users of dune are happy does a top ten in one magazine really matter?
im not sure its the definitive, the be all and end all, its just opinions at a given point in time

sure its fun to discuss these things, or it should be, but we shouldnt be diseartened by any omissions from such polls as its only a top ten.
take music for example, how many of the current top ten tracks in your own country, wherever that maybe, do you really like and how many artists do you like that never even bother the charts?
use what you use and if it makes you happy and does what you need then why does it matter?

ps: @richard, thanks so much for orion, over the years its gone from strength to strength and been my main host since around orion 4, when i first got into making music on a computer (never own a computer before the...) keep on keeping on!

you should contact applied acoustics. and "lennard lost the code" is just internet rumor, don't put too much on that. myrna, you're using OLD plugins. if the developers don't update them, that's on them. the macpro is not discontinued. do some research, all you're doing is ranting.

LOTS of pros use macs. some don't. get over it, and put some energy instead into getting AAS to UPDATE their software for the 21st century..

the CM list is fun, certainly not definitive. i knew as soon as i posted it there'd be trouble on the forum (all the more reason to post it). :D

am sure some kid's getting his mom to buy him those EXACT 10 plugins right now...
