Yeah the U-he freebies Tyrell and Zebralette are without doubt the top free releases last years together with the DUNE BE, but ZynAddSubFX has also had a lot of updates and become a stable VST and is in my opinion one of the all time best free synths. Together with 'oldies' like Helix beta, Voyager, Alpha 3 Free and Synth1 that's my top list.

All good sound, but none of them compares to Synth1, feature wise.
Also check out SQ8L and pg8x.
If you've been out of the game for a while you really should check out the new commercial analog emulations that use zero delay feedback filter technology: U-he DIVA, and TAL UN-O-LX. Analog emulation has made a big step forward recently. These two synths are stunning examples.

I'm on board for a lot of synths previously mentioned-- ZynAddSubFX, Tyrel. But a lot of HG Fortune's stuff also went free recently to make room for his newer synths, such as Altair 4, spacey sounds, STS-21, STS-26, LaserBlade (and S), etc. underneath the Nearly Forgotten Gems moniker.
