I do mostly classical music of all kinds, but I love jazz, too. Sometimes I like to cover famous themes from movies or computer games

my favorite genre is to make live music,playing instruments with the computer,playing,singing and mixing altogether through one computer.

one for reducing overall costs.
second,if your do it well you don't need so much people which need to be payed for working for a full regular band.

third,if there would be more smaller live concerts and not only ridiculous expensive festivals this would create jobs as well but it would be much more affordable for smaller organizers.


although at the moment this seems extincted in the world of fast and also cheap producing.


if playing a live concert is only possible with extraordinary costs of course only a few people can afford this luxury.

I used to live in this commune with two other big bearded dreadlocks and we used to perform live.. Actually we had several 'calibers' for live performance; dj act (2-3 guys), a live dub act (8-track reel and mixer and effects, 2-4 guys), acoustic instruments band (7 guys) and full blown electric band (7-10 guys).

Now, I'd do it all over again just for the fun of it, just get the travelling expenses covered, maybe some food and a little herb and a place to sleep at. The head honcho, he's a really talented musician and wants to be a professional - so he always complained about the money. But who would organize something like that.. Getting even 100 euros per guy was magical. People who organize events (well, roots reggae is quite underground here), they could never pay upfront but from the ticket sales, and even they want some money for the effort, to cover the advertising and all.. It's a sum of many things to get proper money out of it, I mean, get like over a hundred people to come to a dance and balance the ticket cost so that people don't consider it too expensive, make it on a date that people just get their dole money, actually put up the posters in due time..

And one time we had this gig way up north that was properly organized, we even got hotel rooms and proper vegan sushi.. They had the money, but couldn't pay it to us, 'cause we didn't have a business organized so they could pay us legally with taxes and all. It was a huge mess, we had to pay for the gasoline ourselves.. Eventually we did get paid for it, but it was like five months later.

We started selling stuff at gigs, records, pipes, etc.. And people were excited, "Oh you got records? How much is it? SIX EUROS?!! I want to drink beer, go bother someone else!" or "But I don't have a vinyl player!"

You either have to do it out of love for the music (= no pay) or have a big name and do it for a living (= becomes stressing) or play music you don't want to play (= makes no sense).


A little over a year ago I moved to a different part of the country to start in a school and even though it would be fun to play with the guys again, I can't afford the travelling to get in to rehearseals and all. It's a huge amount of work to perform for few hours in front of people; several rehearsals, travelling around the country, setting up for the gig, do the gig, pack up your stuff, go sleep somewhere, travel again, put the equipment back in place, wind off.. So it does make sense to demand some money for the effort. And no one wants to pay for that.

BTW, have you ever been at the Chiemsee Reggae Festival in Germany? That's a big one, there are a lot of Reggae bands.

I've just wondered - Reggae in Finland? I think even in Germany there is probably more interest in Reggae than it is in Finland.

Reggae is actually relatively big here and there's actually some people making their living out of it. It's been growing for the past ten years or so now and there are dances every week somewhere. Even today there's Cornel Campbell performing in Helsinki..

Edit: and Coppershot throwing a free gig tonight as well.. and Horace Andy tomorrow at one festival. Big ting a gwan..

Well you know The Abyssinians sing "There's a land far far away, where there's no night, there's only day" clearly they sing about Finland and the summer here, the sun never set in midsummer! And we got this month atleast to go still! Yea..

And actually checking this one event list, even Beenie Man come here in few weeks. But clearly there's more dancehall action than roots, the Helsinki scene is big.

it takes time anyway.

and the venue which could not pay to you is a newb mistake.

if you only had a simple registered association or if you would know somebody which have one.

not a big deal you got it sorted.

otherwise,driving 500 miles for a concert seems a bit steep,yeah it depends but organizing a second or third concert in the surrounding country could be possible as well.

The summer is great in Finland, but how do you get through the dark winter - without sun? Just asking (seriously), because I couldn't image to live in Finland in the winter...if I don't have sun just a few days, I get extremely depressive...
