I still haven't heard from anyone who has used one with a FW audio interface, though. Anyone here have any user experiences? There's a thread on it here, but still no actual user experiences posted.
Retina vs. non-retina Macbook Pro?

Thanks ericj23, D.Josef and biomechanoid for the input. It seems so far that normal operation is pretty robust with the thunderbolt - FW adapter, but bus power support is flaky. Most audio interfaces seem to need more power than the adapter can supply. I'm using an RME Fireface 400 as my interface, so I just sent RME an email in order to confirm how it is with this particular interface.
There's a bit more info about the firewire bus power issue here:

I've confirmed from RME that the Fireface 400 should work ok with the Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter, but not with bus power. That seems to be how it is with most interfaces. I think that might just tip the balance towards the non-retina for me, as bus power is very useful for me.
I've started to get interested in the idea of swapping the superdrive for an SSD in the non-retina MBP, as mentioned earlier. Has anybody done this or does anyone have any info of how this works with Apple's warranty? Has anyone not based in US done this?
According to OWC, there are specific US laws that state that "manufacturers cannot void the warranty on components that are not directly effected by the placement of after-market upgrade components". However, I wonder how this would pan out outside US (in my case in UK)?
