Hi Cantabilites,
On a recent gig Cantabile would not recognize my Softstep controller. I recreated the setup the next day and luckily I still had the problem. I don't know what causes it but I found a cure. If I just OPEN the Midi devices dialogue window and reclose it the Softstep works fine. I wish I could have figured it out onstage.
I don't believe this is a Cantabile defect. I used Midi-Ox to troubleshoot. I had the same difficulty with Midi-Ox. At first it would not recognize the SoftStep controller. By simply opening and reclosing the window where you setup devices the problem (no communication) was eliminated.
I also use a Roland accordion. I had a problem that when I sent a certain patch number (I think it was out of range) then Cantabile became so slow (like latency) that it was unusable. At first I shut down the computer to fix it. Later I found just opening and reclosing the configuration window would clear the problem.
I am just trying to understand. Does opening and reclosing these windows perform some sort of reset?
Thanks,
LooseBruce

This is an unpleasing situation...

If you had similar problems with different applications I have to point to the midi driver...

Try to find out if you're using the latest midi driver for your SoftSteop device.

Sometimes changing the USB cable can help too.

Thanks very much for your answer. The problem has gone without a solution. At the very least I hope it stays gone.

I have also experienced inconsistent connection (not recognized after some time of activity) with the softstep and ableton. I turned to a last resort solution, got the midi expander box and connected via midi cables. Lame to have to do so, but it works.

Hi Cantabilites,
I finally found out what was going on in Cantabile that caused the slow response when I sent a specific program change. It was MY fault of course. I was concentrating on a solution for when it occurred instead of finding out what caused the problem in the first place.

The program change was enabling a sub session I created which bypassed ALL of the racks (in an effort to silence all the VSTs when I wanted to). Sometimes when I enabled this sub session Cantabile would slip into this unresponsive state much like high latency.

I eliminated this sub session and now Cantabile is rock solid. Also, I just reviewed your video about sub sessions. I see you are suspending ALL racks when you want silence. I will try this solution.
Happy Camper Here!!!,

TI mentioned this earlier: USB Cables

I have a Focusrite Sapphire 6 USB interface, great interface,
but, it likes this one particular skinny grey USB cable that has a
"lump in the line".

When I tested other cables I tend to get slightly higher (+5-10%)
CPU usage and some crackles and artifacts.

Never a problem with the skinny grey cable!

hmmm..............:?

I admit I have no clue either how to recognize a high quality usb cable...

But cheap cables without any spec may be dubious. These are most likely for slower USB 1.x speeds. Explicit 2.x or 3.x spec is for sure better.

Some USB cables have filters behind the plugs - these round cylindrical ferrite core things - that may ensure better transmission.

Maybe there can be grounding issues with improper power supplies of external gear.

Finally when USB devices are powered over USB the cables are probably a weak component with too much internal loss - especially with longer cables.

Just some thoughts - maybe we can identify USB cables that work better than others by some of these points.
